The "building" shows for the most part aren't staged.. house hunters on the other hand..
Had a friend who bought a house, a month after he bought his house the House Hunters guys came to him and asked him if he wanted to be on "House Hunters" .. he was slightly confused at the offer and told them that he wasn't looking for a new house, he had actually just bought one, they told him that was exactly what they wanted, that they would take him to 2 different houses and then their house, and "say" that they picked the house they had actually bought a month before.
Turns out.. the houses they look at aren't always on the market either, same month another friend of mine was asked if she would mind her house to be on House Hunters.. she told them her house wasn't for sale and she was told it didn't matter, they would pay her to have her "go on vacation" and they were just going to empty her house and make it look like it was on the market, and "show it off, because they thought her house was really cool looking, and they wanted to show off her house to make the area look better, and the people looking had already bought a house."

Exactly. Who cares if it's fake? You still don't know what is going to happen.
Love it or List it is the same pattern every show; Hillary gets frustrated that she can't get most of what they want done, that guy starts off showing them crappy houses but then finds them one 50 minutes into the episode.
Hillary would make a good WYHI.

I associate it with waiting rooms.

Love It or List (don't enjoy the banter but like the renovations)
Note - I have no idea why the homeowners always bitch and throw a fit about going a little over the renovation budget but are fine with looking at houses 100k over their house budget.
The thing that pisses me off is the people always buy a house with a basement that they "were so happy to have and use as extra space." Cut to 5 years later and the basement hasn't been touched.
Basements are fricking stupid

watch it constantly but usually in the background when I'm on the computer.
Love it or list it is really getting on my nerves though, because it's so formulaic and the two twits who run the show get old really quick.

In. Started watching when I was looking at buying a house. Been hooked ever since. The shows get you all fired up like you can actually do some cool stuff to your own house, then you realize that you have no idea what you're doing and in fact you just sit around watching more TV.

I don't mind the hosts, but the formula is a little stale. You always know the couple won't get half their renovations(this is a lot like real life though) and that it will come down to the third house they show VS their own home.

I do. When nothing else is on, my wife and I watch the hell out of some House Hunters and HH International. I also like Love It or List It, Holmes on Homes, and a few others.
Hell, I even entered the HGTV Dream Home constest.
