Captain America, to me..was the type of guy who would jump in front of a bullet for a stranger. Superpowered or not, he always struck me as a guy who would sacrifice himself not to save a world, but just to save 1 if he had to and not even question it.

I have to add to this being it is the movie/tv board..

Bill Bixby's portrayal of David Banner in the Hulk series was one of the best casting decisions in comic book/live action history.

People think of the Hulk and more times than not, only envision the green massive creature..Bill really brought out the brilliant, innocent, gentle and sorrowful side of the complex being and set the bar. Showed you why the Hulk was dangerous as all hell,..but not "evil". Really got me into the hulk and cared about the character.

Over 30 years later and he's still the Greatest of all time. In my opinion no one has even come close.

You know I was never really into Superman when I was younger. It just seemed everything was to easy for him and he only had the one weakness. Then I started watching Smallville and was like damn this guy had one hell of a complicated childhood. I am a big Superman fan now cause of that show.

I grew up a Marvel fan so most of my favorite characters are from them and most Avengers based since that was probably my favorite book most of the time.:

- Thor (probably the first book I read regularly. They had some great space adventures)

- Hawkeye - (great character development, going from pretty much a villain to a jerk when he first joined the Avengers who was always butting heads with Cap and everyone else to a core team member to a leader, although with still some rough edges)

- Thing (What's not to love about the Thing. Great everyman character with powers but a strong tragic element too).

- Spiderman (Very relatable character with a good back story and entertaining rogue's gallery)

- Marvel version of Hercules (very underrated I think because it was not an original Marvel character. Fun character to follow)

- Iron Man - (He had some great adventures against a variety of different villains. HIs power and gadgets were just the right level to allow him good stories - not too ultra powerful but believably capable of holding his own with some of the more powerful ones)

- Captain America (He had a good back story as a hero out of time which allowed some great character developments. Plus all the turmoil in the 60's and 70's like vietnam, Watergate, etc. gave him lot of depth).

- Beast (another character with a tragic tinge to his story but great acrobatic powers/skill set and fun dialogue. His friendship with Wonderman was pretty good too).

And I grew up as a DC fan back in the late 50s->mid-60s. Which is to say I hardly ever bought a Marvel comic, with the exception of the Fantastic Four, and I remember a (Marvel?) hero I kind of liked - I think he was called "The Fly" or something like that. I think he had a yellow uniform or cape.

But my main reading was always DC comics. Today I really regret I was not bi-lingual in my comic book reading back in the day. I see I've missed out on a lot of really great action heroes, villains, and stories by neglecting to include a lot more of the Marvel universe in my youthful readings back then.

If we're going to include Goku, I'm gonna throw out there Vash the Stampede.

- Used to be Spidey in the comics - but that character has been destroyed by the comic writers over the past, geez, 10-15 years. Now, I'd say the x-men as a whole.

- Superman is cool - hated the latest movie though. Batman, pre- new 52.

I have a theory that whatever company had the best tv shows/movies at a particular time had a lot to do with the direction kids growing up at that time gravitated to. For me it was those Marvel cartoons with the great theme songs - "when Captain America throws his mighty shield", "Spider=man, Spider Man, does whatever a Spider can", "Tony Stark makes you feel he's a cool exec with a heart of steel", etc.

Then when you'd get your comics from the spin rack (remember them?) at the local drug store/department store you'd naturally pick those up.
