All the episodes are good but I always enjoyed the early years of nypd blue.

Honestly David Caruso was magnificent in the first season. One of the most underrated performances of the last 20 years & yes better than Smits.

He really fricked up leaving it.

Caruso and Sipowicz in the first couple of seasons were incredible. Drunk, angry Sip beating confessions out of scumbags was worth the watch.

top 5

started a full rewatch a few months ago, about halfway thru season 5. Amazing how well it holds up. Even on the cusp before prolific cell phone usage, it was such a well orchestrated show from top to bottom

Sipowicz played almost the same character on Hill Street Blues. HSB is a largely forgotten gem.

I'd put Hill Street ahead, simply because it came first.

Still remember the episode where Howard (the SWAT guy) bought a tank. That was fricking great. Capt Furillo was trying to get through to him about public perceptions, and Howard was just about having the best tool for the job.

Beverly Hills Buntz anchored that character in a horribly comedic way. Sipowicz was Dennis Franz’s amazing return to drama.
