Looks like they can multiply existing food, but can't make it out of thin air. I don't think they can transfigure non food items into food.

Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration is a law governing the magical world. There are five Principal Exceptions to Gamp's Law, one of which is food.
It should be noted that while food cannot be outright created from nothing, it can be multiplied if one already has some food to multiply, it can be enlarged or the food can be summoned if one knows the approximate location and is fairly sure the food will still be there.[1] It should also be noted that while food cannot be conjured, consumable liquids such as sauces[2] and potable water can be.[3]

I feel like there's a lot of potential for a comedy skit where a some normal arse bloke has to teach a bunch of teenage wizards Algebra

This is why I’ve always wondered why there was such a powerful bureaucracy. Seems to me that the wizarding population should be pretty libertarian since the government doesn’t need to provide them with anything. They don’t even need roads.

Well you can transfigure a stool into a pig, and then kill the pig and eat it. I don’t care what Rowling has said, she dedicated an entire course to this. It’s a plot hole.

Rowling is your answer to this question. She loves big government. What's hilarious is she even writes about the dangers of a controlling government, yet she is fine with the government doing everything for you.

I guess it all depends if the transfigured stool is really a pig post-transfiguration. It may look and sound like a pig, but would it really be pork you're eating, or something else. This may be a plot hole, or just minutiae that really doesn't add or subtract from the story.

There’s a lot of shite that doesn’t make sense in HP’s world. Like how in the world could Potions be more important than math and English?

I've often wondered this, and I think these are either classes that don't mentioned or they learn these skills in other manners. Math is probably a big component in doing potions.
Been awhile since I read the books, but I think this is the case.

Remember, this is secondary school, not college. They probably take 7 classes a year, not 4 or so (college fulltime). So the basic education (math, science, grammar) + magic specialties, instead of the electives we take. History is probably in the mix too. PE is out, art is out, things like that.

We all "know" Hermione aced her regular academics, and Ron got by with C's; no need to spend time there.

They have an entire unseen world in which magic is used. They use it in everyday life. Are you being obtuse or are you not paying any fricking attention to the movies as you "power through" them?

There are other places outside of the Ministry and Diagon Alley. For instance in Fantastic Beasts, it's set in New York. So I would assume there are a lot more jobs/roles available than the surface shows.

It’s surprising that Hogwarts didn’t have any grad students. You would think the professors would want to do research as the leading institution in the study of magic. They need some dumb grad students to maintain their lab after too many reps of the same bad spell
