I remember having the same look Mark Hamill had after TLJ but for a different reason. How could Vader be Luke's father....was he lying just to torture him or was it true.

I saw it for the first time at age 11 in theaters during the 97 release and it officially became my favorite movie. Still is.

Don’t be fooled. I was there for Empire in the theaters. We were all blown away.
No one walked out disappointed. The big question was whether to believe Vader. We couldn’t believe how the good guys got so beat up, but everyone thought the movie was great.
Ditto. Well said, I was there too.

I left being pissed about Vader being Luke’s father. That was devastating news to accept.
I left being pissed about the love that Leia was having for Han. I wanted Luke and Leia to hook up.
I left being pissed that the damn movie ended as they were preparing to go rescue Han, that it would take 3 years before that would be resolved.
I didn’t leave pissed because it was a shitty movie.

It was badass. I remember there being next to no whiny bitches crying about it.

Empire is GOAT and ain't even close. The end when Vader asked if Hyperspace was deactivated on Falcon to only see them jump to Hyperspace was brilliant. Vader shaking his head that he was surrounded by idiots was just masterful.

3 years to wait, and Star Wars was IT back then. The love, excitement and anticipation we had for it back then isn't seen today for movies or TV.
Sure, we had Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers pop up, but they were pale, shallow copies of the Big Show. You just HAD to see it; incredible fun and excitement, and the twists in Empire just established that you really couldn't predict what would happen. If Vader was really Luke's father, what else would happen? Remember, in that same speech, Vader said that together they could rule the galaxy; and we got a glimpse or two of the Emperor.
After processing that Vader was indeed Luke's father (and I think Lucas had to come out and say it was true), you wondered a little if Vader might actually swing back in a more active way- and consider that this character was actually now a scarier onscreen presence than Dracula was. The big hulking black suit (I thought he was as big as Chewbacca back then), the creepy breathing, the lightsaber, the Force choking.
And now, that mysterious connection...

The only thing to complain about is it was a cliff hanger and the resolution had to wait three years.

But as to my initial reaction? When I first saw it I was probably eight or nine years old. I had not been exposed to Star Wars before watching the original trilogy so the twist about him being Luke's father took me completely by surprise. I thought he was lying. That and the fact that Han was frozen in carbonite and the fact that the Rebels actually lost kept me from watching Return of the Jedi for the longest time. I was too afraid to see what happened next!
I was scarred by The Empire Strikes Back! So scarred, in fact, that I was hesitant to re-watch it for the longest time. It wasn't until I was in my pre-teen years that I got over this phobia that I had developed with Empire.

I was 12, I remember it being incredibly frustrating, but that was because of the cliffhangers, not because it was bad or disappointing.
Like someone else pointed out- poor Han. He was my favorite (and lots of others, too), so his fate crushed me.
Also, Vader being Luke's dad was out of left field (understand that this includes if you were spoiled by reading the book as I was)- just that concept didn't sit well with me.
There was a lot to process, and then confirm... and you had to wait 3 damn years to resolve it. Star Wars was exhilarating and told a self-contained story that was complete at the end; Empire leaves everything incomplete. Maybe a better way to set up the next film, but was irritating at the time.
That all said, Empire was far and away better than TLJ, there's really no contesting that. Nobody is coming out of TLJ saying they can't wait to see the finish, and that they were brought almost to climax only for the film to end prematurely. It will be seen, at best, as filler leading to the finale, no matter how that goes.
For all of Empire's "wait for 3 years" frustrations, we got to see the development of Han and Leia in a very satisfying manner, and they addressed a couple of complaints about things (Artoo plugging into a computer socket and solving their needs; in Empire he plugs into a power outlet instead and gets fried).
Plus, the advancement from SW to ESB on a visual level was amazing.
All this exactly...except I was 10 not 12.

Ok, let's get right down to it: for the original fans, story and acting were fun and ok enough to get by.
It was the VISUAL experience that made Star Wars tick.
Star Wars- nobody ever made a sci fi up until that point, that the effects weren't leaving a lot to the imagination. They just couldn't do it, that was the reason Disney emerged so long before- certain imagery was just impossible to see in live-action.
Star Wars pulled it off. We finally had a film where space flight and space combat looked every bit as real as, say, Midway for WW2 air combat. Great visuals, and the real key of the escape scene was the impression of speed while trying to gun down the Tie Fighters... "they're coming in too fast"
Remember Star Trek, when all we got was a static shot of the Enterprise, sometimes firing phasers or torpedos? This gave us movement.
Empire elevated that, now the ships darted around, the Falcon barrel-rolled and veered around crazily.
Jedi kicked it up a notch.
The prequels- Phantom Menace gave us fluid and graceful lightsaber fights, while cleaning up the space action a bit.
AOTC gave us s 5th Element planet with Jedi able to freefall for literally minutes, and super-Yoda. Also gave us an impressive battle scene as the Clone Troopers arrived.
ROTS gave us a proper naval battle with broadsides.
What did the new series give us so far? TFA has the frozen blaster fire, and Poe's too-agile X Wing (that was a little too jarring, compared to everything else we've been able to view. I felt the turns were just TOO much).
R1 gives us another space battle that was ok, but not new; but it also gave us the imagery of the Star Destroyer hovering low over the city, and it gave us a little Vader fan-service.
What did TLJ give you that is new, and groundbreaking? The lightspeed crash? Cool, but immediately made me think of Samurai Jack for some reason. Nothing else was WOW I have never seen THAT before.
If you take the story away, you must at least continue to push the bubble with visuals.

The lines for Return were insane.
This movie was going to explain everything.
This was before cineplexes...just one giant screen with a million seats in a giant auditorium that went back about 200 rows.
And the lines for the tickets went around and around like a snake.
You stood in line for the ticket and then you had to stand in line for entrance. You had to get there about 2 hours before the movie started...and this lasted for months.

Saw it when I was 17 and was blown away. I remember sitting there when the music blasted with the credits and thinking how friggin' awesome this movie is. Couldn't wait for Return of the Jedi. Still the best of the whole lot.

I was a senior in HS and it was freaking amazing and is still considered today by many as the best of the franchise. The space scenes of Han Solo Navigating the Millennium Falcon through the asteroid field was sensational for it's time. Then the epic battle of Luke and Darth Vader was riveting.
To compare TLJ to ESB is comical at best...
