"as a child" ... we had 4 channels on the TV, the channels all signed off the air about midnight, and video rental stores came out when I was in college

Lots if horror films. I had access to old exploitation films of the 70s and 80s, so shite like Ilsa: She-Wolf of the SS, Cannibal Ferox, Dolemite, A Cruel Picture, etc.

I figured out early on how to copy VHS tapes. I could fit three movies on one tape. My mom didn’t understand the technology. Some of my rips had long pauses in them because she would hit pause to go to the bathroom.

Because mom took the FBI warnings at the beginning of the tapes seriously, she made me keep all the tapes hidden in a giant samsonite suitcase in my closet.

So, we never really rented movies repeatedly.

None.

Back in my day, there was no such thing as renting movies. We rode our bikes to the local movie picture theater, paid our 19¢ to get in and watched the show.
