It’s Titanic, hands down.

It’s a complete narrative and genre departure for him. So much so, that everyone thought it would sink him.

The rest of his films are all science fiction (True Lies being the lone exception). Dude stepped out of his comfort zone and created a historical costume drama on par with and as significant as Gone With the Wind.

What’s more: it was such a passion project that he forewent his salary in exchange for profit sharing. If the movie was as much of a disaster as the ship itself, Cameron would have made nothing.

Eh, Cameron is a reasonably respected deep sea explorer and oceanographer. At the very least he is the best gateway from pop culture to that field of science.

Heck, I'd say his best work, which isn't even listed here, is Ghosts of the Abyss, since that kinda stuff is right up his alley.

Titanic and it’s not even close.

Titanic is just a really solid, grounded film with larger than life characters, beautiful cinematography, and an incredible soundtrack. There’s no other way to put it. It’s miles ahead of Cameron’s other films.

The rule with Cameron is pretty simple - the more successful at the box office, the more it sucked

You sound so retarded saying this

Titanic was a stupid movie that was carried by the recreation of the boat. If you placed everything else in that movie on a nameless yacht, it's forgettable

The movie is named after the very prop that carries it. Cameron, with some exceptions, isn't a great story teller, so he hides it by visuals and backdrops.

These are the only ones I have rewatch multiple times in the past 10 years.

The Abyss was great until that stupid and cheap looking ending.

Really surprised to see The Abyss not get more love in this thread.

It's my favorite of his flicks. You actually think this is made at the bottom of the ocean. The depth, the stress, the tension, and the effects are all top-flight. It doesn't stick the landing as well as it could have, but there are dozens of scenes that are absolutely perfect with their editing and tightness. The scene where Ed Harris drowns in the pink liquid, it's amazing. I remember being convinced that this was real tech when I first saw it.

T2 and Titanic are both iconic for obvious reasons. But The Abyss is his best work.

Well, yeah. The mythology surrounding the sinking of the Titanic is the backbone of the entire story. Take that out and it's a middling romance flick.

That's my point - Cameron started using props, gimmicks, and effects to hide his actual story telling.
