What do we know about Andy Taylor's backstory?

This is just an idle thought I had. They don't tell us much about his past, but we can glean a few hints.
He's a widower (obviously).
He and Barney have known each other since childhood.
He had a high school sweetheart. They reconnected at a reunion, but the spark wasn't there any more.
He's a veteran, presumably WWII, and had been to Paris when he was in the Army.
Anything else?

Let me see, was once in Power Station, went out on his own, highlight was when he had a song featured on Miami Vice

Little know fact - he spent that time going to law school and learning to control old people. Later he was to change his name to Matlock and clean up on these twin talents.

He's one hell of a model American.
Slow to anger, talks first but can handle business if he needs to, high-school hero, athlete, a solid cop who never locks people up for dumb shite, puts family first, a good dad, a great friend, a solid sense of humor, and a community activist.
If all local police acted like Andy the world would be a better place.
In the flip side, if Andy acted like the current local cop, Gomer would've been tased and shot dead a long time ago. And Otis would either be dead or serving a life sentence.

He and Barney have known each other since childhood
He delivered his HS (Mayberry Union High) valedictory speech
Caught the winning TD pass for MUH in the big game. 4th quarter, down by 4, 4 seconds to go on the 4 yard line -- "and I was 4th string end".
Moved to Cleveland (I kid you not) but eventually returned to Mayberry about 20 years later.
I've heard he later became an Atlanta lawyer, but I hope that's just a baseless rumor.

There are other rumors about Andy and Barney I don't want to get into here

He actually got into law because as a child, he got tired of seeing Aunt Bee's robbed by her gentlemen callers.
This is from a deleted scene in the episode Aunt Bee's Deep Pink Ecstasy.

He eventually murdered Ernest T. Bass. Ernest threw one too many rocks. Andy and Barney escorted him to the edge of town and put a bullet into his head. They threw his body in the river. They finally saw the last of Ernest T. Bass.

I think Andy was raised by Aunt Bea - making him an orphan as well as a widower.

I agree, as a kid in the 60's, I thought Andy & Jed Clapett were the smartest people on the planet.
Always thought Andy was a lot like my dad who I dearly love. Wasn't the sheriff but he was our scoutmaster. We had a really active troop. Taught a lot of wimpy kids about camping, hunting, fishing, & forestry. We had our own Christmas tree farm. Even had the same haircut as Andy from 1960-1968.
With someone like Andy around we wouldn't need Oprah or Dr. Phil!
