What did the academy see in Anora?

Just watched it and thought the first half was especially compelling. I have to say I didn’t expect young playboy to be as incompetent as he was. But once he runs away and the whole movie is them finding him it really dragged for me. Overall I thought it was fine but best picture? Not so sure. Although 2024 and 2025 were definitely bad movie years compared to 2023 and likely 2026 (thank you Christopher Nolan!).

There was nothing likeable or relatable about her character. She was just a golddigger. None of these characters were likeable.

My wife hated it.
I got the feeling that the filmmakers saw her insane scene in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and thought, "We should make an entire film where that actress screams like she's being burned alive in a swimming pool."

They wanted to crown Emilia Perez what with all its tranny love to stick it to conservatives but that movie was so god awful that they pivoted to Anora…

I thought it was a fairly generic story and didn’t really understand the hype. It was obvious how it was going to end and she wasn’t a particularly sympathetic character. Haven’t thought about it since I saw it.
