Well said. The gent behind The Wire thinks Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the best TV series of all time.

Is he right? Well, in all honesty, I think not, but he loves it.

It would be better for this question, which is asked every couple of weeks, to be what are your favorite TV shows and why?

Some great shows:
The Crown
The Wire
Breaking Bad
The Office
Mad Men
Seinfeld
Sopranos
South Park
Simpson’s
House of Cards
Deadwood
Lost
Game of Thrones
Parks and Rec
Cheers
MASH
Friends
The West Wing
Orange is the New Black
Star Trek
X-Files
30 Rock
The Americans
Boardwalk Empire
Downton Abbey
Fargo
The West Wing
Band of Brothers
Arrested Development

If I was on an island and had to pick 2 to watch:
The Office
Mad Men

2 shows I think were actually the best of all time:
Breaking Bad
Sopranos

if choosing 2 and only 2, you gotta go with a drama and a comedy.

the drama is a tight race between sopranos, breaking bad, the wire, even game of thrones.

the comedy is seinfeld.

Star Trek TOS How can that not be on the list.
Spawned 6 tv shows and another 3 in developement, 9 movies with another in developement. Star Trek TNG had 4 movies, so 13 movies total.

I would also include MASH but a good arguement can be made about other shows.

For my money I always go back to seinfeld...definitley the best comedy of all time but "best TV show" is impossible to really define becuase there are such massive differences between genres. There are several reasons IMO that seinfeld runs away with best comedy though.

-It has universal appeal. It's not a "show about nothing" IMO, quite the opposite actually as it's a show about everything in the sense that it's common everyday occurences that people experience in their lives. All the little things in life where you stop and shake your head or think twice about something seinfeld talks about, its content is something just about everyone can relate to.
-It's easily digestible. A show like ARrested development or 30 Rock may be in contention for "funniest" up there with seinfeld, but those are shows you pretty much have to devote full attention to or you could miss a ton of the jokes. Seinfeld, while still being witty and hilarious, is something you can devote full or passing attention to, but not something that is so dumbed down like big bang.
-It's timeless, IMO. Old school shows like the honeymooners or all in teh family may as well have been filmed 100 years ago. Even a show like Friends just kind of "feels" dated watching now. Seinfeld ended 20 years ago but could be a show made today.
-To take that point a step further, it's not really a niche show for any particular demographic. A 15, 30, and 60 year old watching in 1997 could all get equal enjoyment out of the show as a 15, 30, and 60 year old watching it in 2030.
-It was true to itself. No serious talks and life lessons, no getting protagonists married or have kids "just because" you have to, no after school specials or "very special episode"s. The show knew what it was and did that the same way to the very end.
-It's simply hilarious
