Also, Mel Gibson is definitely American.
the irony here is that people who like this movie essentially feel that its detractors are joyless, and yet I have 2 responses getting technical about an obvious joke

anyway,

people like the movies they like.

but if anyone tells me chariots of fire is better than raiders of the lost ark, I'll fricking kill them.

To be fair, your joke delivery is as communist as your disdain for this movie.

And I think this movie is awesome, and I guess I get why you say it's "really stupid," but I don't understand why. Things make sense within the framework of the movie. Seeing as it's pretty much a popcorn flick with little regard to historical accuracy, it succeeds pretty well at that (which you even admit to since you do like it).

if you hate the Patriot, then you should move to North Korea

yea it has some shitty dialogue and takes extreme liberties with its source material, but as a story it's compelling and entertaining

I like it for the ambiance. The look is so right. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking it or that people who like it are stupid. I just think it's a turd

Entertaining? Maybe. Compelling? No, it's insulting and overly bland and generic.

Yes the plot makes sense, it's just all very stupid though

It's kind of cheap in the way it gets the audience to connect to some really bland characters.

Kids dying, wives dying, burning innocent people alive, taunting about said atrocities.

Oh and don't even get me started on the whole race thing. Nothing really happens between them, but hey they're friends at the end...because something happened. I guess.

I'm going to have to agree again

the protagonists arc is complete by the time the second act begins. The bad guy is just a murdering frick, there's no depth to his motives or anything. I'm not even sure exactly what the plot is supposed to be

Agree, it doesn't stick out in the crowded Revolutionary War revenge genre

I mean, they're friend because the super racist dude admired that the black dude stuck around to fight for his country even though he had served his time and could've quit. It was all about respect.

Sure, it was contrived. But to sit there and say "nothing happens so why are they friends now?" seems like you missed the point on purpose.

But I don't want to get into legit discussion about the movie...this thread is way more fun to just sit back and call people communists.

Yeah, I didn't hate it but I remember thinking at the time that Braveheart was a much better story of a freedom loving patriot sticking it to the king. William Wallace was a true American hero.

I'd respect the movie more if they have a more accurate portrayal of Francis Marion (who Mel Gibson's character is loosely based on).

The skill at which Gibson turned the war around I thought he was supposed to be a manifestation of all those well-known guerrilla leaders.

The Patriot could have depicted this accurately (instead of a one-sided good vs. evil story), and it would have been an even better story.

I think they briefly hinted at it with some of the militia shooting some surrendering British but that was about it. As you alluded, the fact that he was a plantation owner with black workers that somehow were not slaves makes it pretty obvious how much they were trying to protect his character.

eta: And yes, it certainly ignores the neighbor wars the patriots and the loyalists were fighting.

The depiction of Tarleton (Tavington in the movie)

That, and he didn't actually die in the war.
