It is the other people in the movie theater. There is now almost always going to be trash in every theater you go to, talking, taking phone calls, on their distracting phones texting, etc. All around awful experience that makes going not worth it.

I guess I've just been extremely lucky then, because like I said that rarely happens to me

Either that or most people must think Friday at 7 PM is the only time to see a movie

I think i might have been saying that pirating is a problem for a 20 dollar at home Mulan release but probably less so for the Mandalorian or a Netflix movie.

you would be dead wrong

some random screenshot of something random that someone may or may not have seen recently

This is perfect.

Even before this I would go by the theater to just to popcorn and go home and watch a movie on VUDU with the Mrs.
Now I can do it and watch the theatrical movies.

Theaters had a nice run
chains did.

People will still want the nostalgic experience, but the way people have been creating living room theaters for years now..and now in 8k, was only a matter of time. Covid just sped it up.

invest in a movie-theater style bucket popcorn maker, great northern popcorn kernels, big vat of snappy coconut oil and carton of flavocol

pure bliss. nothing like the smell of fresh popcorn popping.

So let me get this straight you have a popcorn popper but you feel the need to steal and brag about stealing movies? Did you steal the popcorn maker?

I used to think that way too but I can only think of a couple times where the strangers around me added something positive to the experience. I can think of many where it was negative.

I agree with this for a majority of films.

But gotdamn. I couldn’t think of seeing LoTr on its first release on a small arse screen.

And for current, no way in hell do I wanna see Maverick on a 55 inch TV.

This is why you have seen an explosion of home theater setups in the last 10 years. You can easily get better sound, essentially as high picture quality and have all the various comforts of home and the ability to pause. As for immersion, our primary seating positions are 11' from a 120" side 16:9 and it is every bit as immersive as a theater. While there are plenty of high 5 figure and well into 6 figure HTs it can be done on a fairly tight budget.

Take a look through the home entertainment and theater builder section in the Audio Video Science forum (AVS) and you will be amazed at what people do with small budgets and really amazed at what they do with large budgets.

None of that compares to the Battle of Pelenor Fields on a huge arse screen with that music pounding and the horns blaring.

I just finished my home theater, it sounds great... but it doesn’t hold a candle to one of the imax theaters at AMC.

For being in my house, I’m super happy I built it because midway through covid I figured movie theaters were on the way out. Looks like I made the right call.

But I just watched Ready Player One in 4K and 5.1 and the theater experience is just another level. It’s the immersion. Maybe in the next house I’ll get the ok to build a big one.

That's the nostalgia talking. Theaters should go the way of the video store.

AMC response

quote:

AMC, the world's largest theater chain, is criticizing Warner Bros.' newly unveiled plan to send its 2021 feature films — which include the Suicide Squad sequel, Dune and the fourth Matrix movie — to the studio's streaming service, HBO Max, on the same day the titles release in theaters.

“Clearly, Warner Media intends to sacrifice a considerable portion of the profitability of its movie studio division, and that of its production partners and filmmakers, to subsidize its HBO Max startup," said Adam Aron, CEO and president of AMC Entertainment, in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "As for AMC, we will do all in our power to ensure that Warner does not do so at our expense.  We will aggressively pursue economic terms that preserve our business."
