I must have missed something. What bastard baby?
I saw Lagertha losing her baby, but don't recall any bastard babies.

I don't recall a bastard either. I saw the miscarriage, but that was it.
That was another great episode. I loved the message he sent the king at the end.
Next week's episode looks interesting. The priest has certainly went native. I like his character and I hope he stays around.

Is the historical record (or the myth the show is based on) count as a spoiler?
Ragnar Lodbrok was a real Viking Chieftain who pillaged England and France. You can google his name and find a bunch of information.

I know. I love norse history, but Ragnar is partly myth -- no one can really decide how much.
The bastard baby was the child that Lagertha said was the son of Helmdall in her King Solomon moment. She said the baby was the child of a god to protect him and the mother from harm.

Well the Vikings did not write a whole lot down so pretty much all of their history is word of mouth and embellished quite heavily.

It seemed stupid for the King to pay Ragnar all that money, then say that he was going to war with him. Why not just raise up your army at that moment and attack and save yourself all the gold? Surely the King had superior numbers to Ragnar's crew.

But, she sent them on their way. Why are people thinking that now she's going to adopt it?

How is Floki such a bad arse warrior? He looks like he's the Vikings version of Keith Richards.

Survival.

Well, historically (mythologically) one or more of Ragnar's sons was adopted. It seems convenient to add a son here. It's easy to write that the father was abusing the child and mother and let Lagertha take them in.
