First reactions for Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s “Scream” have arrived online, and it appears the fifth time is the charm for the long-running horror franchise. Film journalists are calling the new entry “a fittingly loud, bloody good time at the movies” and the best “Scream” movie since Wes Craven’s 1996 original. Franchise veterans Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette all return in the new “Scream” opposite a cast of newcomers that includes “In the Heights” breakout Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, and “The Boys” favorite Jack Quaid.

The official “Scream” synopsis from Paramount Pictures reads: “25 years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.”

“Early” reviews.

Perhaps, for once, early reviews won’t be typical hacks trying to hype-up a movie, but I’ve got to think, if this movie were any good, they wouldn’t have released it in January.

Studios don’t really dump their trash in January like they used to. Blockbusters have become a year-round affair. That being said, I take “early reactions” with a grain of salt because they’re almost always fanboys trying to generate hype for their favorite franchises.

On a side note, what happened to Paramount as a major studio? From 1972 to 1997, they were the kings.

1972: #1 movie AND best picture, Godfather
1974: Best Picture, Godfather II
1981: #1 movie, Raiders
1984: #1 movie, Beverly Hills Cop
1986: #1 and #2 movies, Top Gun and Crocodile Dundee

1989: #1 movie, Last Crusade

1994, Best Picture, Forrest Gump
1995, Best Picture, Braveheart
1997, Best Picture and #1 movie, Titanic

And then nothing. They had a franchise going with the Transformers movies until that turned into a joke. (Still hoping for a Bumblebee 2 though.)

It's good enough for me. It's the fifth flick in a horror series, it just needs to be in line with the rest of the series and not be terrible. Though I say this as a Scream fan that bought tickets to opening night as a Christmas present for me and my wife

Digitally de-aged to make it appear like Randy made it back in 1997.

And the characters will conveniently still have a working VCR.

Really excited for this one. 1 was amazing, 4 was good, 2 and 3 were typical of their time period. Is the prevailing theory still that Stu is alive or something? I thought I read that on here.

The old way of thinking when it comes to the movie release schedule was already going out the window prior to Covid but now it’s pretty much an obsolete way of thinking.

While the first film is legendary, all of the Scream films are good, IMO. My only complaint is some of the killer reveals were silly but everything leading up to the endings have been scary and entertaining.

Looking forward to this one.

Scream 2 is fine but has the unfortunate task of following the first.

Scream 3 was bad. I just watched it a few weeks ago and it’s just never good from start to finish.

4 was fine. Much better than 3.

"Early reviews" are press junkets.

For once I'd like to see early reviews "this movie sucks!" "Don't bother watching this!" "Stay away!"

Early reviews are like those glowing paid Amazon reviews for shitty products.

It could be good but you gotta at least wait for some feedback from regular people.

Scream is the most consistent slasher franchise out there right now. Of course Scream 5 could be an all-time worst film and screw that all up, but just about all of the previously released films are solid slasher films. Scream 3 is obviously the exception but even it is better than most slasher sequels.

3 is more disappointing than anything. They had a great concept w/the murders happening on the set of a Stab movie but fumbled the execution by having the killer be a long lost brother. Also, Sid's dreams w/her dead mother were just weird and should have been cut.

It ended being a pretty “meta” movie, though. What with the story of Sid’s mom trying to be an actress and getting passed around Hollywood in a movie made by Harvey Weinstein’s company.
