Urban Cowboy waited nearly 30 years, but it finally has a follow up. Urban Cowboy part 2 will begin filming in December of 2009 and will star Ben Savage (Boy Meets World, Little Monsters) as "Bradley Joe Davis", the nephew of Bud Davis - the legendary performance played by John Travolta. Travolta will not appear in this movie (although a small cameo is rumored), as the storyline is that he died of cancer.
Savage inherits Travolta's legacy and goes back to legendary cowboy nightclub Gilley's when he learns of a bull-riding contest that pays $100,000 to the winner. The rest of the plot is unknown as this time.
Other cast members will include: Melissa Joan-Hart (Drive Me Crazy, Clarissa) as "Brandi Sue McEwing", the love interest, and Jesse Bradford (Swimfan, Bring It On) will reportedly play rival "Butch Dundee". Roles will also be played by William Zabka, Gary Cervantes, Annabeth Gish, and Majandra Delfino. Filming is set to begin in mid December and director will be Joe D'Amato (After Death).

All Hail Wiki
Gilley's closed after a falling out between Gilley and Cryer. In 1989, Gilley's suffered an arson fire that gutted the interior but the building's shell was still standing until 2006 when it was demolished by the Pasadena Independent School District, its current owner. Only the old sound recording studio remains. (The old sign can be found at the Cowboy Ranch, a local restaurant). Gilley still makes his home in Pasadena.
On October 2, 2003, Gilley's was reopened: this time in the larger urban center of Dallas-Fort Worth. The new club features a 26,000-square-foot (2,400 m2) main show room and the original mechanical bull, El Toro, featured in the movie Urban Cowboy. In total, the new club has 91,000 square feet (8,500 m2) of restaurant, entertainment, meeting, and private function space. There are currently seven venues inside the Gilley's Dallas facility which can be rented for special events and combined with multiple themes, not just country. Clever and artistic event planners have turned the enormous space into various themes ranging from a Moroccan theme with belly dancers and aerial artists, to an Asian theme, to the streets of Venice, and even a beach theme with sand.

Is Ben Savage going to be able to pull off a line like, "All cowboys ain't dumb. Some of 'em got smarts real good, like me"

No links as of yet...had to dig to find this.
I think it will be marketed well and looks to be a theatrical release by Fall of 2010. 30 years later from the original. Savage should be good in ths role.
