The Jeremy Irons boardroom scene should go down as a classic movie scene.

Big Short did a better job showing how the real estate crash affected average people but Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling were way overboard in there acting. Christian Bale was good as was Carells staff but the rest of the movie was cotton candy compared to Margin Call.

Margin Call is a movie. The Big Short is a condescending lecture that treats its audience like idiots.

“I’m telling you this is it!” It’s a legitimately great film. Acting is off the charts.

Rightfully so. To this day majority of people don’t understand what caused the housing market collapse. Always comparing every market downturn and debt to 2008. “Student loans are too much, it’s another 2008 waiting to happen”. “Oil is dropping at historical rates, this is similar to the housing market crash!” “Price of truck nuts and auto loans are outrageous, going to be another 2008”

Margin Call is a better movie

The Big Short is much more accessible

I made a thread about Margin Call when I first stumbled upon it on youtube (watching Big Short clips, funny enough). I had no idea how I had never heard of it before

Margin Call does turn into this towards the end, especially the last scene with Irons/Spacey

Margin Call plays like a thriller so treats the subject matter better and more seriously while The Big Short treats this collosal calamity like it's a Billy Bean failed trade ala Moneyball.

I agree. MC's cast was solid.

I found Margin Call the exact same way and it just happened to be on Starz the month i found it. That's a pretty stellar cast for a movie that got no run at all. I agree its a better movie, but i like both. The Big Short actually does a pretty good job of explaining some things, albeit in a somewhat condescending manner.

Big Short is a black comedy while anything J.C. Chandor directs is almost deathly serious and dark in tone.

There are scenes in Big Short that are laugh aloud funny. The best being the Gosling pitch to Carell and Co.

Personally I found the pace of Margin Call to be a bit weird.

It was kind of slow at first, then goes breakneck based off one analyst's model to the point where an entire firm's board is assembled at 5 AM in a matter of hours, and then the ending seemed sorta slow/flat as well.

Solid movie, but I didn't find it overly enjoyable.

in my office i have the (1) be smarter (2) be first or (3) cheat and "why are you necessary?" on post cards in my desk

quote:

If you really want to do this with your life you have to believe that you're necessary, and you are. People want to live like this with their cars and their big fricking houses they can't even pay for - then you're necessary. The only reason people get to continue living like kings is because we've got our fingers on the scales and we're tipping in their favor. I take my hand off, well then the whole world gets really fricking fair really fricking quick and nobody actually wants that. They say they do, but they really don't. They want what we have to give but they also want to play innocent and pretend they have no idea where it actually came from; and that's more hypocrisy than I'm willing to swallow, so frick 'em.

Kinda how I feel when comparing the big short to vice. Vice was the first movie I’ve wanted to walk out of about 30 minutes in

Never seen margin call, might have to give it a look

Here's the clip that made me want to see it. Spoilers, obviously, but nothing too terrible.

i don't think the spoilers are a big deal b/c you know what it's about already
