There's no way I can say Covenant is the second best Alien film. The first two are far and away superior to the rest.

I will say Covenant is a strong contender for the third best, IMO. It isn't a bad movie, just a flawed one. The plot is pretty by the numbers and the characters make some dumb decisions. That said, it's visually impressive, the xenomorphs are scarier and more dangerous than 3, Prometheus and Resurrection and it's pretty well acted, even though some characters are underdeveloped.

3, Prometheus and Resurrection all have massively off putting things about them. 3 kills the Aliens characters offscreen. Resurrection has Ripley's character going from a likeable human to an unlikeable clone with weird superpowers. Prometheus makes you think it's an Alien movie and then it lets you down.

Covenant was an Alien movie, wasn't cheesy and paid off the originals. I'm not going to bat for it as a great movie. I do think it was a solid movie that is right there with 3 for the third best in the series. It's obvious that none of the others comes close to the first two.

I need to go back and watch ALIENS again, but I was not a huge fan of this film. Coming off of the first film, it felt way too cheesy and over-the-top. Resurrection felt like ALIENS only it didn't take itself seriously at all, which is why I actually kind of enjoyed it.

I'm pretty apathetic towards Alien 3. It has elements that I really like, but the studio meddling drags it down.

It's definitely not one to watch expecting the first film again. Aliens is a great movie, but it exists in a completely separate genre than Alien.

Alien is a horror movie. Aliens is a war movie with the sci-fi elements. Aliens was more or less the first movie to seamlessly blend those two genres.

I don't get the idea of it being over the top. Stuff like the rescue mission at the power generator, the aliens breaking into the compound and the facehugger loose with Newt...I can't see those as over the top. Those are executed 3x better than anything in Resurrection, and that's before the climax with the eggs and the ending battle.

Alien might be one of the best sci fi films of all time.

Aliens just feels so generic

This is true. And I would say it's pretty much straight up action, rather than "war." While it still holds a few horror-type elements, overall it's an action movie with typical military tropes.

I do like Aliens, and think it's solid, but I always feel that it is pretty overrated based on how awesome people usually feel it is.

I think Baloo and I are the only people on Earth that actually think Alien 3 is the superior movie/sequel. I don't know why, but I just love it. I think the whole trapped in a prison in space thing, along with the cat and mouse they play, Ripley still being a badass, etc. And I still say that people hated it mainly because it wasn't on Earth, which was how it was marketed at first. But lost within that hatred is a really solid Alien film.

I like Alien 3 more than most. I think the prison planet concept is a cool one they sort of let down.

My biggest issues with 3 begin with how forced the killing of the Aliens cast is. It comes off like they couldn't figure out how to handle it, so they just killed them in between movies to not have to write that part.

I thought the character development beyond Ripley was pretty weak in 3. It's Ripley and a bunch of bald prisoners. Other than the preacher aspect to Charles S Dutton's character, I couldn't really tell you anything about the other characters.

The bleak vibe doesn't really bother me. In fact, it's one of the stronger parts of the movie, that it's so hopeless. It almost helps excuse the lack of character development for me, because they're all doomed anyways.

That's why I put it with Covenant. Both are flawed but I don't regret watching either. I was let down after Prometheus and Resurrection is only really enjoyable as parody for me.

It’s Alien and Aliens then everything else. The order of those two can vary depending on your sci-fi preference and there aren’t bad answers for either one being better.

alien covenant was terrible. Prometheus should have had a way better sequel. i was excited for this advanced race, and they all die?
