"Brick" by Rian Johnson, starring JGL and Lukas Haas, while fairly acclaimed by critics is almost unheard of by the mainstream and is, therefore, woefully underappreciated.

I don't know that I've ever seen anything quite like it, despite the obvious and purposeful homage to film noir.

It is Rian Johnson's first feature film and was written by him and highlights his ability to capture tone and mood with light, shadow and color.

Brothers Bloom is another woefully unappreciated film of Johnson's that is at turns hilarious and tragic.

Hard Eight
Falling Down
Frenzy
Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (Straw Dogs and Cross of Iron too)
The Dance of Reality (not getting the love it deserves)
A Serious Man (a few Coen bros movies come to mind)

Not sure if those really qualify at all but they do not seem to be popular. As far as when they were released, John Carpenter movies were always under appreciated.

Three Con-Artist movies that should be more appreciated because they are so re-watchable and good.

1. Nine Queens (one of the best con-men movies I've ever seen) - LINK

2. Matchstick Men (Cage, Rockwell)

3. Tin Men (Dreyfuss, DeVito)

I honestly thought most people loved these two movies, along with being so critically acclaimed.

That sort of fits the bill. I do think it sort of gets lost in the shuffle of other Paul Thomas Anderson movies.

That could probably be said about several directorial debuts. They are appreciated by critics maybe, but forgotten about by most. You mentioned Slacker. Blood Simple from the Coen Bros is another. Pi from Aronofsky. Bottle Rocket from Anderson.

Thank you.

You're welcome, it's a top 3 Western of all time and Wayne's best movie to me. He was at his prime and the rest of the cast is unbelievable.

Pi from Aronofsky

Very interesting movie, I remember Sisklel and Ebert talking about this movie back in the late 90's. It was Aronofsky's 1st movie, I think. He's one of the few directors that anything he does I will go see it.

Also, The Fountain is seriously underrated, I don't know if it's a great, great movie, but there's just something mystical and intriguing about it that I will always stop on it and watch. The last 15-20 minutes of it leaves one in awe.

Some movies that I enjoyed people seem to have forgotten about. Probably mostly younger people who weren't watching movies 15 years ago or more:

Dead Calm
Colors
Marathon Man
No Way Out
The French Connection
Bullit

TBF I qualified my French Connection mention by explaining it was younger viewers who had not heard of it.
