TulaneLSU’s monthly movie rec: Jasper Mall

Friends,
A decade ago if I did not see five movies at the theatre each week I felt I was doing a disservice to the Arts Board. While my theatre trips declined in the years leading up to COVID-19, I still loved attending the shows, usually at The Palace in Harahan or The Prytania, where I saw my first movies. Like many of you I miss the theatre experience and all the memories the sounds and smells that go with the big screen.
In the absence of movies, I have traveled a little more and found myself watching movies on the stream. It amazes me how we can turn on a TV and receive so much information, colors, and sounds, all through waves invisible in the air. Perhaps now I watch five movies a week again. I do not like shows except Frontline and NOVA and docs by Ken Burns, if you consider those shows. It is seldom these days that I find any new movies worthy of merit. I did find that Peanut Butter Falcon flick touching.
Last night Amazon recommended I watch Jasper Mall. I looked at the thumbnail of the film, if that is what it is called when you click on the film but before committing to watching it, and noticed the actors simply named Mike and Robin, as if they were American equivalents of Pele or Bono and needed no further introduction. I said to Mother, “Shall we at least view it for a few moments to see if the cinematography is worthwhile and not like those cheap ‘Christian’ films made with IPhone quality cameras?”
Mother nodded and we committed to the film with another click. It did not take long for both of our attentions to fix on the beautifully made film. I won’t go into details of the film’s plot, but will say the film left me with tears in my eyes on several occasions. It is perhaps the most elegiac of films of the decade, and is sure to stir a range of emotions for anyone born between 1970 and 1990 in America.
The film is ripe with deep symbolism as well as a beautiful picture of small town America South, capturing their stories and minds better than any of the many documentaries I have seen on the subject. While the film may focus on the mall, the people that make the mall make the film.
Mother and I are already planning a trip to Jasper to visit this mall. And we may also do some travels to malls nearer to see these decaying beauties. Please share your thoughts on this movie once you view it.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

Friend,
I thought this may be about Jasper, Tx. I would’ve recommended stopping at the Valero station and a tasty Whataburger.
Stay well,
S

Is that the one loosely based on Showgirls with Elizabeth Berkley?

Friend,
How beautiful! I regret to inform you that Kmart and JC Penney have closed. Garfield’s and Belk remain open. Mother was just commenting that it is the most religious of films she has seen since The Tree of Life and is asking if we can watch it again. I answered resoundingly. Could it be even better on the second viewing? How touching and entirely life filled was the first viewing. I feel as though I made friends and have new insight into life that I may share one day, but not before you, my friends, have the opportunity to watch it. Forget the stories and characters, if you only appreciate aesthetics and photography, this film will grip you by its cinematography alone.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

Did you go back and edit all your unidiomatic posts made before you settled on this persona? Too lazy to go look.

Friends,
I have created a watch party for Jasper Mall on Amazon. When enough people have joined, I will start the movie. Come on in. There is even a chatroom! If you don't have Prime, I think you can rent the movie to join us.

Yo, that legitimately looks like one hell of a depressing movie. Hard pass.

I think the filmmakers did a really good job not making it as depressing as it could have been. They portrayed Mike as a guy that truly cared about the success of the mall and all he did to make it a warm, welcoming place. And all the locals featured in it could have easily been portrayed in a mocking fashion, but I found most of them pretty endearing. My work takes me to Jasper several times a year, and when I started watching it I wanted to make fun of the some of the people portrayed in it, but I ended up really liking most of them.

Friend,
Well said. Mike is an amazing individual and I am glad now to be able to call him friend. As I sat in his office just this week, talking with him, I noticed that, besides his desk calendar showing July 2018, he is a bastion of virtue, promoting clean language, good behavior, and seeing God's goodness in all things. He spoke glowingly of some of the fellow cast members in the film, as though they were his own family. If you ever have the chance to return to Jasper Mall, do everything you can to meet this gentleman, Mike.

P.S. I cannot wait for the watch party in just 45 minutes!

Friend,
I would love a follow up on the young white girl who was going to college at the University of West Alabama. I hope she found academic success there. I really liked her and the youthful innocence she portrayed.

Dear Friend,
Oh yes! I was so happy when news came that she received an 18 on her ACT, which was one point higher than the admission requirement. What would make for a great narrative arc is for her to return after graduating from West Alabama to start her own thriving business in the mall. Then she could truly fly her own airplane, "with lots of gas"!
I do not think I have ever before seen a documentary that captures people better than Jasper Mall did. I read criticism about it -- that it does not have a plot and is boring and does not address questions like why malls are failing. I think such criticisms are foolish, as the movie first and foremost is about the people of small town America who have a most complex relationship with these malls.
