If the show is just about Marty and Rusts characters then why did the writer use an elaborate serial murder mystery to keep the viewers interest?
Because a show just about characters sucks and even the writer knew it. It seems to me like he got over his own head and created this big mystery and didn't know how to wrap it up

I'm pretty sure he did, he just didn't wrap it up in a way people were expecting
In the first or second episode rust says something along the lines of "nothing is ever completely solved". I think that was a little foreshadowing that they weren't gonna solve everything

So he wrapped the murder/cult/mystery up by not wrapping hardly any of those storylines up?
And it's not about solving anything. I think people would've been ok with the detectives getting killed. Just anything other than the bullshite we got fed.
Non-premier intellectual movie/tv show critics that have been posting how great it was not withstanding

I think marty put it perfectly when he said "you use evidence to start bending the narrative to your view"
I feel like that was part of this show. Everyone wanted to create something out of nothing but it was what it was. The thread that went for 20 pages about the family dinner and marty's clothes epitomizes this.
shite, even the show's title gives away what the plot was about. It lends itself to how great the show was written that all these bizarre crazy theories arose.

i argue the opposite
throwing out a bunch of obvious clues (red herrings, in reality) you have no intention of answering is easy.
just look at Lost and the shite show that became

And now everybody who liked it is lying saying oh I was just watching to see how Rust and Marty's characters relationship evolved. First off that's bullshite. Secondly if you truly were watching for character development then you should he severely disappointed because these characters never changed from episode one.
I think Polazzo made a huge error in choosing the show's format. The 8 episode mini series is perfect for a plot centered around a murder mystery. I feel that 8 episodes isnt the best way to deliver the buddy cop character study. If NP wants the focus to be on marty, rust and their friendship, the whole series should be about them, and they shouldn't introduce new actors and characters every season. Let each season be a different case that marty and rust try to solve. There just isn't enough time in the 8 episodes to tell the characters backgrounds, develop them and their friendship, and get the viewer to care enough about them. People didn't watch the sopranos because it was about the mafia, they watched because the characters were great and we witnessed them change, develop, regress, etc.

This is the first thing I've agreed with you on. Although I don't think true detective ended up near as bad as Lost. The only reason I finished the last 2 seasons of lost was because I thought " I've spent countless hours watching this show so far, I can't stop now"

Was a great show. Interested to see next season but it sucks that MM and Harrelson won't return. The acting by them was top notch.

I have hope.
I'm glad they just used Louisiana as a backdrop and didn't make it all voo doo and Cajun.
