When does it actually get good? I watched the first three episodes and gave up.

I think the show comes into its own in the season 2 episode 2 “Jim Lahey is a Drunk Bastard”

Seasons 3-7 are peak TPB. The Netflix seasons aren’t great.

Agreed.

I forget which season it is, but I know it's pretty early on. The season where the whole plot is to scheme up enough money to buy a cruise trip by doing small jobs so they won't go to jail is my favorite.

Season 1 is slow and different than what the series ultimately became. One of the primary side characters (Trevor - Michael Jackson) actually didn't like the direction the show went as it evolved into pure excellence.

Seasons 2-7 are golden for the most part, but there are a few whiffs in there. The Netflix seasons aren't nearly as good, but they do have their moments. The Leslie Dancer and the following season when Barb went all prison d_ke were the worst.

The movies are also good, although not exactly "cannon" in the sense of show continuity.
-Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys
-Don't Legalize it
-TPB the Movie
-The Christmas Special

The Jail shorts are actually pretty funny, as well as some of the in-between seasons on Swearnet.

This show and Always Sunny are my two goat comedies of all time.

Seasons 4-5 are probably the apex of the show, in terms of quality, but anything from seasons 2-7 of the original run are way up there as one of the most original and funniest televisions shows of the past 40 years.

"The shite Winds" may be my favorite line.
