Honestly, the type of villain I think they need to go for is a villain that challenges this Messiah figure and his boy scout mentality. Zod can't do this really. I'd go with a villain in the sequel who will make Superman choose between the people and things he loves and his role as savior of the world. Maybe a World War III scenario when a villain as or more powerful than Superman comes in, knows Superman's identity, and uses it against him to try and keep him out of the war.

if they really do plan on doing a trilogy, they'll have to leave the hero in a bad spot in the 2nd movie

the intro is just telling you the whos, whats and whys and building the backstory for the conflict

People are tired of seeing Lex Luthor man. I know he is to Superman how the Joker is to Batman but they need to let Luthor lay low for a movie. I'm sure he will show up in one of the inevitable sequels. Between Superman I-IV, Superman Returns, and (to a much lesser extent) Smallville, I think the vast majority of people are all Luthored out. I know I am.

when facing Luthor yes but if you were to go with other villains then he is not. That has always been the issue with the Superman movies. I'm glad Zod is in this one.

The problem is all these villains tend to be extraterrestrials, and Earth is merely a stopping point and not the end and only goal. Aside from Luthor, all of Superman's antagonists on Earth are no real threat to the world at large. They pretty much just fight Superman and don't give a crap about world domination. I think Superman's rouge gallery is desperately missing an antagonist who is from Earth, is as powerful as Superman, and very much has world domination in mind.

Agreed. Personally I'd up the stakes each film like TDK trilogy did. First just keep it simple with Metropolis in danger; introduce your characters and move on.

Second should be the fall, and probably a World War III scenario that arises due to Superman's presence. Superman's legacy will be in shambles at the end of it and definitely have Luthor as president to bring down his legacy after the sheer amount of destruction the villain achieves.

Third should be alien invasion where the whole world will be at stake, and then Superman comes in, saves the day, and regains his legacy. Brainiac or Darkseid would be the clear villain in this one.

Superman movies don't need to be about world domination. Parasite, Terra Man, Metallo... all Earth men who would make for a great movie.

They wouldn't really be that great unless they were the muscle for say Luthor, Darkseid, or Brainiac. They could work in a film, but as the main antagonist, no.

And I stand by that Superman's rouge gallery is missing this aspect.

trailer looks really good, hopefully they do Superman justice and it's a great film. Cavill already looks much better as superman than Brandon Routh to me.

Never was a big superman fan but wow was that a great trailer. Doesn't hurt that I'm a huge Nolan fan and probably one of the only fans of Zach Snyder. Dawn of the Dead, 300, and Watchmen were great films for their respective genres. The less said about Sucker Punch the better...

Not a huge Snyder fan, but it's very clear that he's taken Nolan's approach from TDK trilogy to heart.

The imagery in all the trailers I've seen (including the leaked Comic Con footage) looks amazing.

And, as others have said, Nolan & Goyer have found a way to make Superman relatable...

The cast is also really really good. Michael Shannon will kill it as Zod.

Hope this move does what Batman begins did for the batman franchise. Always loved superman.
The previous two superman movie incarnations were ok, but somehow just missed the mark of greatness. This one could go over the top and put Superman back up there as the #1 DC superhero.

Pure speculation, but I would not be surprised if the capture/"arrest" scenes from the trailer come at the end of the movie, setting up the 2nd act.

Supes rises, people are wary, but he seems okay (helping people and stuff), the Zod and the others arrive and proceed to frick shite up royally, with Supes prevailing only after a long, drawn out battle that costs lots of lives and treasure.

People blame Supes, deciding he's the reason for the "supervillains" (think the prologue of The Incredibles). Movie ends with him captured, while the next bad guy (Darkseid) hinted at (like the end of Avengers).

That should more be the second film when the populace turns on him. I don't think Darkseid should come til the third film.

I just used him as an example.

I think the turn happens in this one. Then humanity comes crawling back in the 2nd when there's another threat (Metallo?). Supes beats him in the first half of the film, just in time to be killed by Doomsday by the end of the film.

"Resurrection" in 3rd film to take on Darkseid.

Don't want Doomsday either. Think he's the most overrated villain in comics. Anyone could come up with that character. Sure he's strong but he has absolutely no personality.

Metallo could work, but not as the main villain. I'd just make up a villain for the second one since I think he needs a villain that can bring WWIII and is from Earth. Maybe you could rebrand Parasite into something else and he'd be an ok choice.
