I really don't think this is the case. Tarkin was the true second in command (at least of the Empire's military) while Vader was the Emperor's personal enforcer when things went wrong. Vader is not good for troop morale and only when they're severely fricking up do you send him in. Before Luke blew up the Death Star, Vader's primary purpose was to hunt down the Jedi and for intelligence on any resistance that may threaten the Empire. Tarkin was more in charge of the day to day and Vader needed Tarkin or the Emperor's approval if he's just going to kill someone. He couldn't just murder Tarkin unless he was engaging in blatant treason. With Tarkin out of the way, Vader no longer had any authority over him save for the Emperor, who doesn't leave the Capital. Vader became a rabid dog which made him such a good villain in Empire.

Read Tarkin. The Emperor sends Tarkin and Vader on a mission together. Vader specifically asks who is in charge. The Emperor tells him that the two of them can work that out together.
As the story moves along Vader and Tarkin allow each other to lead depending on the situation and whose skill set is better suited for what they are dealing with. By the end they both have great respect for one another and basically consider themselves equals.

I really agree with this. The two don't have conflicting interests and are fine being mostly equals. Vader is a much better hunter and intelligence gather than Tarkin is, and Tarkin is much better management material and resourceful in a way Vader isn't. If Vader is murdering one of Tarkin's subordinates, than he'll listen to Tarkin. Plus does Vader really want to micromanage? Vader is the worst possible manager and Vader himself knows it. I think Vader is fine with the nature of his and Tarkin's position.

Is Tarkin really that great at the things you say though? He ignores the warning that there's a flaw in the Death Star during the rebel attack and he laughs off the notion of having his ship standing by. And it was Vader's idea to let the falcon escape with the homing beacon to find the rebel base, which was the only good tactical decision by the empire in the whole movie.
All I'm going off of is the movie because I haven't read the books or watched the shows, but in the movie he's just an arrogant dumbass. I never considered them equals with mutual respect at all. I just figured Tarkin outranked Vader so he had to listen to him.

The movie was made before they ever made any books. The books were made later to give backstory to characters that they don't have time to tell on screen.
Tarkin was a badass when it came to military strategy and being in charge of the imperial fleet. He wasn't worried about the Death Star because he had no idea that Vader had a son who was learning to be a jedi. If he had known there was a pilot who was the offspring of Vader he would have shown much more concern. That shot was one in a million.

I watched the scene again and again, the photon torpedoes curve into the hole, no one without the force was making that shot.
Just watched the trilogy, now re-watching the "other" movies. They really made Anakin a shitty unlikable character.

Am I missing something, or is JJ Abrams' wife an absolute bitch? I only saw the last part of the interview, so I'm not sure, but for the time I saw her, she was very rude in responses regarding JJ (I felt bad for the guy)

That tv spot scene with the storm trooper swirling the weapon makes me cringe. I'm starting to get nervous it's going to suck. Guess I will find out Thursday

I seriously can't fricking wait. I go back home tomorrow after lunch and am watching it with my dad at 8:30 on Thursday. I've never been this excited for a movie. LOTR ROTK is the only thing that comes close. And I was like 11 then.
