I enjoyed Erin Brokovich, but I agree that Chicago was pure garbage.

First, a bit on my method: I looked at their IMDB rank to see if they were “rated”. So I just moved down their top films of the decade and see what jumped out (IMDB rank in parenthesis):

The Dark Knight (1): Are you kidding me? It wasn’t even the best comic book movie THAT YEAR. Iron Man was.

Avatar(5): Pass. It’ll drop after the hype of a new release passes. This isn’t an honest rank, so I’m not sure it’s rated by anyone but fanboys yet.

The Pianist (12): Pretty much all Holocaust movies are overrated as they all follow a fairly standard plot and character arc. But this movie has the added overrated-ness of Roman Polanski. It’s an okay movie, but three Oscars?

Slumdog Millionaire (22): I’ve ripped this movie before, but I don’t hate it. I just think the ending is entirely undeserved and hackneyed. It was decent, but not great. And it apparently had a script written by a 12 year old.

There Will Be Blood (33): I’m the leading proponent on this board that TWBB isn’t a good movie. I’ve beat it into the ground, you know I think it failed on just about every level a movie can fail on.

Into the Wild (35): Words cannot describe how much I hate this book and this movie. Some self-involved brat tries to relive a Jack Kerouac novel and ends up dead. Big whoop. I actively loathe this movie. One of my least favorite films ever made.

Iron Man was good.

Dark Knight is iconic.

I agree with this. Somewhat amusing, but nothing near as great as most people make it to be.

pretty much impossible to weigh the significance of a movie only a year after its release.

The year of Chicago, I was watching a CNN show about the Oscars. The film critics, there were three of them, all said there was no doubt that The Two Towers was the best film of the year.

"But Chicago is going to win."

I freaking hate the Oscars.

Number 2 all time box office
Academy Awards noms and wins
A performance that will live for the ages
and an aura surrounding it because of Ledger's death.

It's iconic and will go down as one of the most famous, I didn't say best, movies of all time.

Wow, I didn't know the Pianist, TWBB or Into the Wild were ranked that high. Good method though.

I would take a mix of awards (Oscars/Golden Globes) and Fan Hype (IMDB) rankings. Seeing those:

Avatar
The Dark Knight
Crash
The Pianist
Chicago

All already mentioned in the thread.

Agree on Babel. While we're on the critically acclaimed movies, I also hated Traffic. Babel was just a ridiculous conceit.

I will defend Brokeback as it is universally hated by this board. It's a good movie. It's not great, and wasn't as great as it's proponents insisted, but its nowhere near as bad as you'd think from reading this board. I liked it, but was kind of like, "that's it?" when it was done. Though I thought the portrayal of the wives was amazing.
