Regardless of what people think of each other's lists, this is a great thread. Enjoyed reading!

I really don't get the extreme love for Villeneuve. I loved ARRIVAL, and SICARIO was pretty good, so I don't think he's some hack or anything... but he really doesn't have a body of work that seems to inspire the devotion he clearly he has. I don't get it.
imo Villeneuve definitely has the body of work to back up the praise he gets

Arrival had me in tears within 5 minutes and is a wonderful film.

Sicario is a gritty thriller that doesn't really challenge you intellectually but leaves your palms sweaty and at least tries to have you question the effects of the war on drugs

Incendies is beautiful and a must see

Enemy is a great abstract mindfreak that gets better with multiple viewings

And then you have Prisoners which can just sicken you and is every parent's worse nightmare but you can't look away.

Now for my answer on top 3 directors

Fincher
Villeneuve
Nolan

Payne was one of my favorites but I haven't enjoyed his last 2 films very much

MY THREE FAVORITES:
The Coen brothers
Cuaron
Fincher

I would switch out Fincher for Nolan and those are my three. Fincher would be a close fourth. McQueen deserves a mention here as well.

I also think it might be a different question of whether one is discussing peak capability/work vs. high level consistently.
