What makes you put him at #1? Doesnt have a resume even close to your other two. Even comparing their recent stuff. But I'm also of the opinion Sharp Objects sucks, so that horribly paced show immediately knocks him way down the line.

Nice list Tarantino is a legend and will be regarded Up there when it’s all said and done . Once upon a time in Hollywood is about to easily eclipse pulp fiction. I like your list and love denis for what he did with the first sicario, truly amazing. But Jean Marc is gold right not everything he puts out now now and in the future is gold. He will go down as a top 7 all time director trust me. We are witnessing something special now

So your basing who the top director is on stuff that will be put out in the future? Makes sense. Also, not everything he touches is gold, not even close.

Uh...

Wild was meh.

Could have been SO much better.

The book was so much better than the movie and that's always the clearest sign that the Director dropped the ball.

Wild was such a disappointment. No ingenuity. No compelling editing. A film student could have made the same film.

Please go back clear your mind and watch sharp objects and big little lies. Easily the two best shows that have come come on this century outside mad men and The Americans. If you can’t recognize the work Jean put on those two shows I don’t know what to tell you. That alone has him in the top 3 with Nolan and Tarantino. If you disagree I don’t know what to tell you other than take a step back then re approach jean’s work again

I’ll just give 3 of my favorites currently working:

1. D. Villeneuve
2. Andrey Zvyagintsev
3. D. Chazelle

Honorable mentions: Joachim Trier, Luca Guadagnino, Yorgos Lanthimos

1. Fincher
2. Nolan
3. Chazelle

If i was asked this same question next week I could easily have Villeneuve in there. I wasn’t completely sold on Lanthimos until I saw The Favourite. He’s definitely one of the most intriguing directors right now. Tarantino, PTA and the Coens deserve to be mentioned but those top 3 are my current favorites

Based on their body of work and continued activity I'd think the consensus top three might be:

Scorsese
Tarantino
Nolan

Based on interesting stuff lately I might think about

Nolan
Garland
Del Toro
