I grew up in the Marvel era, and I have never been a big DC fan. I have never liked Superman, but I respect his history and assortment of powers, even if it seems like he has way too many.

1. Wolverine
2. Batman
3. Spawn - Surprisingly, only his second mention. His comics were awesome. I thought his powers were pretty impressive as well.
4. Spiderman
5. Silver surfer
6. Superman
7. Iron Man
8. Hulk
9. Captain America
10 – 12, Any of the following X-men: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Professor Xavier, Rogue, Colossus, and Cable (technical x-force). These could probably round out my top 15, but for the sake of not making it all X-men...
13. Punisher
14. Deadpool
15. Green Lantern

I always thought the villains were over powered, but I guess that is what makes the heroes so great.

1. Galactus
2. Apocalypse
3. Darkseid
4. Magneto
5. The Joker
6. Dr. Doom
7. Luthor
8. Sinister
9. Venom
10. Omega Red
11. Ra's al Ghul
12. Sabertooth – Love Wolverine, but Sabertooth always came off as weak to me.
13. Dr. Doom
14. Thanos
15. Mystique

Everyone hating on Green Lantern needs to read this:

Geoff John's take on GL is as good as anything. Still, Batman: Year One by Frank Miller is probably my favorite stand alone.

I'd rather Dark Knight Returns

Certainly more famous. It was excellent, but I give the nod to Year One.

The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale was the best Batman story in the last 30 years. TDK stole a lot of imagery from it, go read it newguy01.

This is a great one, but I'd still rather Dark Knight Returns. I've always wanted "Arkham Asylum" but I've never bought it. It's only like $10 on Amazon.
