ThI ending is the weakest part of the movie. They could’ve used about 15-20 more minutes of run time to flesh it out better.

This movie is one of those tests you can use on people. The protagonist is not a good guy, and you can judge people who think he is/defend him. And he's not an anti-hero. He's just a fundamentally immoral person/cop.
This doesn't take away from the movie at all, but it's just an interesting way to judge people and their reaction to it.

One of the best ever. William Peterson is brilliant.

A great cast who were mostly unknown at the time.
Pre-CSI Peterson, pre-Platoon Dafoe, pre-Do the Right Thing Turturro, pre-Midnight Caller Gary Cole, pre-Frasier Jane Leeves. Dean Stockwell and Robert Downey, Sr. had name/face recognition, to a degree, but RDS was more known for his niche stuff and behind the camera work.
It's a fun movie that should make more, "Totally 80s" movie lists.

Same director who did car chase in French Connection ( which is considered to be, arguably, the best car chase scene ever).
I had never seen anything like it. Such an underrated movie. That redhead….(Debra Feuer).
