THR asks "Does the World Still Want Superman?"

This is a good article, so thought it should get it's own thread

Does the World Still Want Superman?
That is a question James Gunn grapples with in the first trailer for his film, which has the pressure of launching a universe and establishing what the hero means for today's world.
quote:
There is something uncomfortable, but not at all unwelcome, in hearing Superman struggle to breathe. The moment grounds us in the fact that Superman feels pain. One of the frequent complaints about Superman from non-comic reading general audiences (and those who missed out on Superman: The Animated Series and other various media adaptations) is that he’s overpowered and rarely faces hard physical challenges. This teaser nips that in the bud right away, showing that Superman is very much physically fallible.
quote:
This begs the question, of whether these themes have become essential to establishing any contemporary film version of Superman. In 2006, Superman Returns tackled “Why the World Doesn’t Need a Superman” and in 2016, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice asked, “Must There Be a Superman?” The respective answers were that the world does need a Superman and “there is.” What Gunn appears to be grappling with isn’t the need for a Superman or the resigned acceptance that there is one, but the question of “how do we make the world want a Superman?” And this question not only applies to the world of the film, but to audiences as well. With all the superhero movies out there, what makes us want another Superman movie?

I think the world could certainly use a morally incorruptible figure to look up to.

It needs a Superman but not some pussy written for MODERN AUDIENCES.
Sure, at the upper limits of damage he should feel pain. But not from mundane stuff.

My two favorite Superman actors. Christopher Reeve and Henry Cavill.

The problem is the people defining his morality.

In the movies, only when Superman fought Doomsday or Zod did was he capable of being injured. Otherwise he just seems totally invulnerable and invincible. He can’t be cut or stabbed or shot. Nobody on the justice league could even give him a bruise. When Batman rammed into him with the Batmobile, Superman didn’t budge an inch. Steppenwolf’s axe couldn’t even knick Superman. The massive explosion at the capitol didn’t even singe his perfect hair. So he seems overpowered.
Compare with Thor, who is also strong but never seems so invulnerable. Thor gets tossed around sometimes in a fight. He can be stabbed—he lost an eye to a spear. Steppenwolf’s axe surely would’ve cut him. Getting hit with the Batmobile wouldn’t have really hurt him, but he would’ve at least fell down.
So I think it’s Superman’s invulnerability that makes him kinda boring. He can be strong and tough but it’s lame when he can stand still and let an axe chop down on him, knowing it wouldn’t even tickle.

Superman is the most universally loved and known superhero across all the world.
What do athletes do when they score? The Superman rip off the jersey motion. My son hasn’t even seen a Superman movie but he acts like him all the time. Every kid wants to be Superman.
He’s beloved and always will be.
It just has to be done correctly and it seems that directors and video games don’t know what to do with him.
It’s not a popularity issue, it’s an execution issue.
Even when the movies suck, no other superhero can give me chill bumps in certain scenes, add Williams and Zimmers scores as a reason why, like Superman can.
Gunn has to deliver or I fear nobody touches Superman for a long time

As sad as it is, it's a valid question. Cultures can change to the point where they outgrow their myths and legends. There's a reason why all of the live action attempts Zorro and the Lone Ranger have bombed in the past 40 years. No one cares about them anymore. The eras that spawned them, along with their cares and mindsets, are long gone.

All this. I think this will be a huge hit if they do it right and just show the characters all perfectly. Just get Clark/Superman, Lois, and Luthor right, and it will be a billion dollar film. If it’s done right, it should be the second highest grossing film of 2025 behind Avatar 3, although live action How to Train Your Dragon might beat it as well.

Well they were both basically replaced by Batman. Superman has yet to be replaced.

You’re comparing apples and oranges.
Thor is not Marvel’s Superman. The Hulk is. Or was meant to be.

I didn't realize a trailer had come out for it yet. Looks incredible, but damn is there a LOT going on there.

Yeah, that's not even close to correct. For years, Thor was the closest Marvel had to Superman in terms of power levels and intelligence. Now there is Sentry, Blue Marvel, etc. Even in the DC versus Superman series 20 years ago, Superman's battle was against Thor.

Here's what a Superman movie should focus on. Since he's basically indestructible give him problems that can't be solely solved by it. Look at the 1978 movie he had a series of problems that he didn't have enough time to fix them all.
