Thoughts on Weapons (no story spoilers but some film structure discussion is needed)

Ok, I’d say the hype is pretty earned for this movie. For the most part, I thought this is solid and what I wanted to see.
Now I didn’t see any trailers other than the shot of the very basic kids running out of the house so that helped me have no expectations which I thought is really helpful.
Now it’s impossible to talk about this movie without talking about its pacing.
I thought the first third and final third were strong. I found the first third thrilling and creepy and the final third tense. The middle third the movie lost me a bit. There are a couple of characters we follow that we don’t really need to. They’re great. All the acting is. But we know what’s happening well before the movie admits we know what’s happening. It gets a little long in the tooth.
This movie isn’t novel. It sometimes pretends it is.
It was nice to see Alden Ehrenreich again. He was in Oppenheimer but here he gets to get a bit back into doing some more fun stuff.
Benedict wong is fun too.
Two characters really stole the show at the end but won’t spoil.
I also didn’t find some of the scares in the movie worked and after seeing the whole thing, some of the scares just don’t make much sense. But the movie is extremely creepy.
Oh, and this movie deals some with grief and survivor’s guilt. It’s not too heavy handed but it does allude to some stuff.
I did think the theming was good but some of it touched to closely to another movie with a somewhat similar story.
Soundtrack is good.
I should add that what I’m referring to above is the film is completely non sequential. It follows character arcs and jumps to important parts of their character arcs throughout the plot.

I didn’t look at it in thirds. To me it was 2 halves. The first half was suspenseful and slow but good. The second half starts with Wongs story and that’s when things get faster but a bit meh. I loved the ending though and I know a lot of people won’t because it ended to abrupt but it worked for me. I feel like they sort of came up with a new way to do an anthology movie after seeing how it was structured.

It was cool how they used the different characters to reveal the villain.
You know what this reminded me a lot of, and I probably prefer it to this movie, is Strange Darling.
Also, the James chapter was great but added nothing. You could also cut the Paul chapter realistically. Neither really add to the story. Just fleshed out timelines

Have you seen Crgger's last movie, "Barbarian"? Very similar in structure to that movie, which I do enjoy. He certainly has his style. But like I said in the spoilers thread, I liked the first couple of acts of both films, but the "reveals" in both didn't really work for me either. Overall, both are very fun, solid movies. Cregger does what Jordan Peele wishes he could do.

What’s the violent/gore level? Wife can handle tense and creepy, but bows out when anything gets too brutal.

If that's the case, I'd tell her to skip this one

I thought it was pretty tame on gore.

how is the villain?
I feel like this would have to have a great villain to hit.

Crap.
I've been optimistic for this one but god I hated Barbarian and its structure was part of the issue (mostly how bad the second half was but it was just such a stark contrast in movies).

Without spoilers, I will say the performance by the person who plays the villain was excellent.

I really didn’t think this was too bad. If you’re a horror movie person, there’s nothing really that you haven’t seen before 100x worse. In general, gore in films has way decreased over the last 5 years in particular

Would you take a teenage girl to see this? My daughter mentioned it, but I don't want to take her to a gore fest.

I would not say this is structured similarly to Barbarian. I would say this is most similar to Rashamon or maybe Memento.
Also, the switching between perspectives is not nearly as jarring as Barbarian. But hey, I liked it in Barbarian when it happened. Felt refreshing to me

I wouldn’t call this a gore fest at all. I think it’s fine for a teenager. There is some brutality for sure but it’s not particularly gross. The worst thing that happens in the movie is 90% implied versus shown.

Not much gore at all. A couple of brutal scenes with brief shots of the aftermath. I think a teenager would be fine to see this film.

Going to a 10:30 showing of this tonight so I don't want to read too much. Really looking forward to it though. Will report back
