I love Breaking Bad, it's probably my favorite show of all time, but the first two seasons to me were just pretty good. The third, fourth, and fifth just stepped it up big time.

Some of y'all think Ziggy was bad(he was)??? It got to the point where I wanted to stab myself in the face every time I saw Skyler.

I hated that guy so much he pretty much ruined season 2 for me. I wanted him to die worse than I wanted Joffery to die. He was so annoying he almost made Skyler seem like an interesting, compelling, sympathetic character. Every time he was in a scene the only thought I had on my mind was STFU and die!

I think I asked you about your Skylar hate in my BB thread, but it could have been someone else I asked. Either way, I would love to hear you elaborate on why you hate her. I think I merely dislike her, and think her klepto sister with her unmoist ovaries was worse.
My answer is gonna sound petty, but she was just SO negative. So....fricking......neeeeeegative. This is a good example of what's so different about The Wire and BB. I couldn't get behind her being so miserable. Nothing in BB felt real to me. I didn't like her and didn't feel bad for the position she was in....probably because I felt like there were plenty things she could do to improve her situation.

I can name 30 characters from The Wire that I felt worse for than Skylar.

I think the idea was - "We're going to have white criminals this season, so we really need a criminal version of McNulty." - and they got a very unlikeable actor to play a very unlikeable part.

Like Ed Norton in Rounders, but without the acting skill of Ed Norton - not that Ransone is terrible, just not up to the typical level of acting in The Wire. There were a few scenes in which he shined - some of the bar scenes and stealing the cars - but the rest of the time, it appeared he was hitting us over the head how flawed and terrible this character was.

I don't dislike Season 2 nearly as much as others - it has one of my favorite scenes - Freamon and Bunk interrogating the ship's crew:

"Negro, you can not travel half way around the world and not speak any motherfrickin' English."

But, Ziggy is one of the weakest characters AND least impressive acting jobs in the series, IMHO.

(On the other hand, the other Sobotkas were great, consistent with the rest of the series.)

Season 2 is my favorite and the best season. You don't appreciate it until it's been a while.

It's a close 2nd for me. It was nice to leave the guys in the hood for jus a bit. Plus it made for an awesome "the boys are back!" situation.

Then it wasn't in the Wimbledon thread.

Clay Davis is my favorite character on The Wire, and one of my favorite characters ever, period.

The way he was just playing Stringer Bell? Oh man, Clay Davis is on a higher plane of existence. What a stud.

Bunk Moreland is the GOAT.

Moreland: I’m just a humble motherf***er with a big-**s d***.
Freamon: You give yourself too much credit.
Moreland: Okay then. I ain’t that humble.

I don't know about all of that - but it is better on rewatch - White Mike, Nick, "Boris" - the interrogation scene I mentioned with Bunk and Freamon - there is a lot to like about it after you get over how different it was from Season 1.

I can't say it's my "favorite" - I still like Season 1 the best - but Season 2 holds up better than I thought.

I watched "The Wire" for the first time earlier this year based on all the high praise on this board. While I agree it was a good series, I know I am in the minority when I say that I don't think it is anywhere near being a 'great' series.

That being said, I do think that both Bunk and Omar are two of the best characters I've seen in a series in a long time. Their roles were well written, consistent and the actors did a great job acting.
