but how does Rabies work

The rabies virus travels to the brain by following the peripheral nerves. The incubation period of the disease is usually a few months in humans, depending on the distance the virus must travel to reach the central nervous system.[2] Once the rabies virus reaches the central nervous system and symptoms begin to show, the infection is effectively untreatable and usually fatal within days.

and can it be spread by bleeding on another human once infected?

Rabies isn't contagious among humans... it's only spread from animal to human.

Transmission
Main article: Rabies transmission
Any warm-blooded animal (including humans) may become infected with the rabies virus and develop symptoms (although birds have only been known to be experimentally infected[37]). Indeed the virus has even been adapted to grow in cells of poikilothermic vertebrates[38][39]. Most animals can be infected by the virus and can transmit the disease to humans. Infected bats, monkeys, raccoons, foxes, skunks, cattle, wolves, coyotes, dogs, mongoose (normally yellow mongoose)[40] or cats present the greatest risk to humans. Rabies may also spread through exposure to infected domestic farm animals, groundhogs, weasels, bears and other wild carnivores. Rodents (mice, squirrels etc) are seldom infected.[41]

The virus is usually present in the nerves and saliva of a symptomatic rabid animal.[42][43] The route of infection is usually, but not always, by a bite. In many cases the infected animal is exceptionally aggressive, may attack without provocation, and exhibits otherwise uncharacteristic behavior.[44]

Transmission between humans is extremely rare. A few cases have been recorded through transplant surgery.[45]

After a typical human infection by bite, the virus enters the peripheral nervous system. It then travels along the nerves towards the central nervous system.[46] During this phase, the virus cannot be easily detected within the host, and vaccination may still confer cell-mediated immunity to prevent symptomatic rabies. When the virus reaches the brain, it rapidly causes encephalitis. This is called the prodromal phase, and is the beginning of the symptoms. Once the patient becomes symptomatic, treatment is almost never effective and mortality is over 99%. Rabies may also inflame the spinal cord producing transverse myelitis.[47][48]

Right, so why go then? It seemed CDC was a lot closer than the army base, which they kept saying was "100 miles away" (and the Asian said it was 125).

The CDC is in ATL. When Shane mentioned the army base he was speculating where a place to make a last stand would be if ATJ/CDC was over run it would most probably be moved to Fort Benning(?) a few hundred miles away.

quote:

So that's only several hours away. Seems like if they wanted to hit up CDC, they'd leave in the morning,

Time line. Atl is close enough to walk but CDC may be on the other side of town so its still a lengthy trip to some extent. They pull off and before hitting town have the RV over heat and Jim wanting to get left by the tree. They handle the situation and continue to the CDC in Atl getting their lat afternoon early evening.

so that if it was a dead end, they wouldn't be stranded there at night.

I don't know what the big deal is. They can all squeeze into the Winnebago for the night and lock the door.

Just doesn't seem to be a logical decision.

It probably would have if the camper wouldn't have over heated, you have to assume there was a few hours lost there.

As for a previous poster mentioning how did the camper get fixed earlier in the thread. I prefer to assume they got the duct tape form a nearby TimeSaver they looted and took turns pissing in the radiator to fill it back up as in Red Dawn!

F that..those walkers were breaking glass in that department store in ATL. I wouldn't take my chances in the Winne for the night.

So is the CDC guy infected too? That shite did go through his glove.

I assumed he tested himself and all was clear...He is a scientist so I am sure that was his first reaction. However it was absurdly foolish to touch the acid like that.

quote:

Well, I think we've figured out there was a skip in the timeline of events... it goes from when the radiator hose goes out and Shane says he's gonna head down the road to see if he can find one to when the RV is repaired and Jim wants to be left behind. It may have been a few hours between when Shane left and they fixed the RV?

I concur!

Are you sure about that. Most zombie fiction call the source of the zombies infections ome mutation of the rabies virus. I would assume transmission between humans would be rare because bites between humans are rather rare?

They don't have to stay right there. They can tool down the road a mile or two and shutter down! Or set a couple of those bodies on fire. The burning flesh and hair will drown out any odors. Remember Sheriff happy was undisturbed in the hospital when the zombies overran it.

Option 2. Get in the Jeep and drive it through the door then block the hole made by the Jeep with the Winnebago(like the bus blocking the alley in episode 1) and take turns posting the guard to stand watch if there is no way to make it more secure. Just thinking outside the box.
