Hiatus is industry lingo for cancelled.

I guess they are tired of Barbara Wawa spinning in her grave, screaming what has happened to my baby.

Exact term used for Doctor Who, numbnuts.

This was clearly at least a week early and not their usual pattern. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been so awkward for them to bring up.
While I'm not 100% convinced it is "cancelled" cancelled, that is certainly a possibility.
What I'm certain of is there will be retooling. I don't know if they shake up personnel, cut down the number of on-air (I have no idea what all their contracts look like), but the show has become a liability and exposure that ABC News is at least going to remediate with this extra break.
It may become a "Colbert" decision after all, but we'll see about that.
Regardless, if not now, the day is coming soon. Talk shows have been effectively replaced by podcasts and The View, Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel are all next on the "way too expensive for 2025 legacy media product" list.

As stated it should be permanent.

Well, then, I'm sure you're right.

Just put reruns of sitcoms or price is right on during those times
Put Jeopardy reruns on and maybe people will actually learn something.
