I truly believe this film not even being nominated for Best Picture in 1999 is one of the greatest Oscar snubs of all time. It is so brilliantly made, the premise is executed so well, and the acting is impeccable. I know this board often brings up the Oscar snubs of the late 90's, and this exclusion should be included in those.

This is Jim Carrey's best performance IMO, and everything about it exemplifies why you root for a protagonist.

What are this board's thoughts?

We accept the reality of the world with which we're presented. It's as simple as that.

Agree.

Great movie, and I don't like Jim Carrey.

I liked the movie and thought is was an interesting concept, but it really lost me when I saw that Truman was in a giant arse dome the whole time. Idk, Jim Carrey was very good in it though

If you're ever in Destin or Panama City Beach you can go see his house and the town where it was filmed

I agree. It gets a lot of love, but it's still underrated.

It may be quite a culture shock going from PCB to Seaside in one day

Burkhard Dallwitz nailed the score. One of my favorites of all-time.

Should have gone to Life is Beautiful or The Thin Red Line out of those who were nominated.

If I recall, it was sort of marketed as a wacky Jim Carrey comedy. That's why it didn't get a lot of Oscar talk. It was also a movie a little bit ahead of it's time.

But I agree, great movie that deserved some recognition.

Now I want to go to Seaside.

The Truman Show, Fight Club, and Being John Malkovich were all from 1999 and all of them were deserving of nominations.
