HBO has released a new trailer and set a premiere date for The Sympathizer — a date will allow the show to just make it under the wire for Emmy eligibility.

The limited series, based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is part spy thriller and part satire. It follows the Captain (Hoa Xuande), a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy through the final days of the Vietnam War and in his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over.

premieres April 14 on @StreamOnMax.

The book got great reviews. Been meaning to read that for a while. Trailer looks great and it's from the director of Oldboy? Count me in.

Pumped for this one. Park Chan-wook directed 3 episodes.

PCW not only directed three, but was a show runner. He had creative control and on set input for all episodes, including the one directed by the City of God director Fernando. His level of detail and precision is tough to match. A true auteur and very kind in the process.

i am interested to see how the audience feels as it goes on … the book gets pretty dark in the third act. The sunny L.A. episodes you see in this trailer eventually will need to get back ‘Nam.

Interesting tidbit: one episode was originally written for Louisiana. I didn’t care for that direction and thankfully it was changed. But there was a time when an episode was shooting in NOLA/Northshore …

TRAILER #1

I think the first trailer released in April of 2023 is more powerful. Was released with two episodes still filming.

The book is fantastic but is written from a very interesting perspective so I’ll be curious to see how adapts to the screen.
