But I loved 1917... I thought it was amazing and truly why we go to the movies. It was so immersive and the way it was shot was beautiful
All of this.
I’m somewhat nostalgic for this movie because it was the last event type of thing I went to before the Covid shutdowns.

It's also interesting to think about the demographic impact that WWI, WWII, and the Stalinist purges on England, France, and Russia. Think about the culling of the gene pool in all three instances and the long term impact on those countries of that. I think it does a lot to explain the gangster in a track-suit archetype of modern Russians
The population of "real men" was decimated. In addition to the survivors (many of whom returned as beoken), almost all that was left were cowards, deserters and closeted gays.

That was the whole point of the movie, individual soldiers sacrificing for their comrades in situations that were hopelessly bleak. And for little to no gain whatsoever.

Check out the Hardcore History Podcasts in WW I, just amazing work
One of the greatest contributions to historical remembrance in modern history.

But Americans I don’t think fully understand WWI in the same way we understand WWII. I think the average American wouldn’t bat an eye if you told them we fought the Nazis in WWI. It’s not that they’re dumb, they’ve just been taught that the Germans were the bad guys in the World Wars and that America were always the badasses in those wars. As you know, WWI was a much more nuanced war than II. I don’t think most Americans realize that and just see Germany as the default bad guy country in the first half of the 20th century.

It depends on perspective but technically Germany was one of the "bad guys" in WWI. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.

Fun fact, Italy is the only country to fight on both sides of both world wars

Someone posted this youtube channel on the OT The Great War. It goes over WW1 week by week. I watched the first few episodes, and its pretty good so far.

Fun fact: You're wrong. Japan was also on our side in WWI.

You're one of the people I'm talking about in the post.
