My daughter just read it in 8th grade and they watched the movie. C Thomas Howell sent the class a video message talking about making the movie and the message

It does kinda get lost in the shuffle. The cast was ridiculous

Used to teach the novel to eighth graders. It was replaced in the curriculum with something more diverse. ??

That's what I was wondering but given the replies it doesn't seem the case.

It was a school staple "read the book, watch the movie" in the 80s/90s and a general teen angst staple before the movie.

In the 90s it was #38 on the ALA Top 100 most frequently challenged and banned books.

This last decade it wasn't even in Top 100. Either schools aren't reading it anymore or things have gotten far worse to complain about.

Definitely an All Star cast.

But iirc, not at the time, for the most part. Which is incredible.

I think thats the entire reason for talking about the cast and how good it was.

I think Howell was the only notable star at the time, which is kinda ironic considering he had the least notable career afterwards.

We read this in middle school and all the guys loved it. A few of them even dressed as greasers for a little while haha. Fast forward 10 years and my little cousin’s class has the same reaction. Me and him have watched the movie several times together. A classic!

I never saw Matt Dillon as anything other than a greaser dirtbag until Wayward Pines as a result of that first impression.

I watched it in my 5th grade class and one of my kids watched it last year in his 7th grade class. So, not totally forgotten.

That's when I read it. Hard to imagine it was just several years removed from the movie.

The cast ended up being a disservice to the movie overall. It is like a bunch of male models all trying to act poor and gritty...maybe you can believe one or two, but not all of them.

Cruise and Lowe definitely didn’t have the greaser look.
