Yep
But someone with knowledge - do plea deals actually work like that where you have to testify as to what you are pleading to? I thought if you just took the deal that was that and it was over.

this show is garbage. HBO needs to do better

Because 1) she's not making any money so the faster and less time she has to spend the better. And 2) She could use the whole "I got a strong murder 1 suspect who was looking at 25-life down to a manslaughter charge with 15". So people who were actually guilty would look for her in times like that
I gotta disagree. The implication was that she is the founding partner of a large firm and she is one of the Gloria Allred types that basques in the media attention. It's also implied that she is a civil rights warrior and she took the case due to the racial undertones of the matter.
Attorneys don't take cases like that pro bono because they think it will play out quick and will be cheap. They do it for the media attention and all the tv face time. Yes the trial would be lengthy and legal bills in excess of 100k, but associate attorneys (like the Muslim girl assisting her) are paid salary and not hourly.

I was under the impression that people charged but not yet convicted and denied bail go to jail and not prison. I'm not a lawyer, so can someone familiar with this situation fill me in?
Posted on 8/1/16 at 8:34 am to abellsujr
Rikers is a jail, but the storyline is weird that they make it seem like a prison, unless all the guys there are awaiting trial(which it doesn't seem like)
Posted on 8/1/16 at 8:41 am to 632627
They def have it set up like a prison the way that Freddy/Omar has so much power and pull in there. Seems like he's been there for years.

Again, I'm not a lawyer so I can't say for sure. But it seems like letting the defendant plea to manslaughter with that much evidence is unfathomable. Especially in a high profile case where the world is watching. I guess they were worried about the racist angle being public, but there is a shite ton of evidence against the guy, and the state thinks a rape is also involved. It's just kind of weird.

Yeah in real life, given the aggravated circumstances, no way the state offers 15 years.

Any theories on what to make of the stepdad tantrum during the funeral?

Not a lawyer but very familiar with the process. In reality the deal you get offered is mostly about the lawyer you can afford to hire, especially for big cases.
There are a couple of New Orleans lawyers that you hire for big bucks, not to actually try and get off, but to get the best deal you can hopefully before, but sometimes after trial as well. One of them was the former mayor of Harahan, he was a great lawyer, but again if you were paying him you were probably going to jail, question was home much dealing he could do to shave time of the sentence and reduce the amount of restitution.

He could get someone manslaughter and 15 years in a high profile national case for a rape and murder with this much evidence?

Also, I think the DA has already done a little research on the victim and maybe her history doe not help the case. Don't know how much of her past would end up being admissible in court, but maybe its not worth the mess.
That sucks, but its definitely happened before in cases like this.

Agreed. None of this makes sense. I know pleas happen all the time, but no way a crime this heinous gets pled to manslaughter.
Also, as I said before, the big shot SJW/civil rights attorney isn't taking this case up pro bono to make a quick plea, it's about fighting in court for a general cause. This trial and the court room is her stage and free publicity. It's not about helping nas, it's about championing her own cause, thus why the plea makes no sense for her.

He was given the manslaughter to make it go away. The newspaper headline that the DA's apparent boss dropped indicated that a muslim had been killed in response and they didn't want it to go to trial and have a whole new spectacle. Makes sense to me.

But Nas screwed himself by making a statement in court but not saying he did it. Not only did he embarrass the state (I'm sure grudges will be held) but his statements can also be used against him at trial now (lawyers here is this right?). We know some of what happened, but based on the media coverage how many people in NYC think he could possibly be innocent?
Also, I imagine no attorney on her level takes cases that they know they probably can't win and will not get paid, I mean that is why she passes the case down the chain and says they now they won't do it for free.
Last, if she is a so called SJW lawyer, you think she wants to attack the dead victim in court, call her a drug addict, sex addict, with enemies in open court to defend Nas? I don't see her going there with her reputation. Also unless I missed it the show never says that she is a great trial lawyer; other than the big media clients, social causes, and her big firm, her and Stone aren't really that much different lawyers, try to find clients, make a good deal, and get paid.

My thinking is she took the case for free for the notoriety and if he would have taken the deal it would have worked. But she was never going to actually go to trial for free.
