I watched the first 2 episodes--not impressed--the dialogue all seems too forced for me and I really tried to like it.

I like last nights, though not as much as the first. I applaud them for not taking the route of trying to portray a major story like they occur every night. We saw great news in the first and the polar opposite this week. Looking forward to next week.

I heard them mention the Gabby Giffords shooting in the preview for next week.

I agree. It's all so pithy. I mean, I appreciate it and it's often funny, but it may be too much. One person, maybe two, who is smart enough and quick witted enough to really send some zingers is one thing, but literally every character on this show gets into the action, which doesn't seem all that believable and does seem a bit forced.
That said, it was still entertaining despite its faults. And there were many.

That's Sorkin for ya. Great writer, who makes great shows, if all the dialogue is your thing...

Second episode was way too much Sorkin for my taste

The least "real" thing on these Sorkin shows is the fact that people don't just haul off and hit the pompous assholes that get in their faces.
If you take every pause in a person's speech pattern as an opportunity to insert a witty retort, eventually you're going to lose some teeth.
That entire "Newsroom" needs a slap.

It's the exact same format as Sports Night. He could at least change things up a little.

Well, that's classic Sorkin. Nobody talks in real life the way his characters tend to do.
That's the thing. For me, much of this show is just light entertainment with the occasional weighty moment or subject. I just plan to sit back, enjoy and avoid over-analyzing.

See, now, this is what the critics were getting at.
They said the dialogue gets ridiculous and over-smug after a while.
They said the Sorkinness was impossible to ignore.
They saw the first 4 episodes and they said it got worse over time.
So, I'm curious to see how you all enjoy it going forward.

It's refreshing to see that others were having the same reaction to the Sorkin dialogue as I was. The zippy, smug, one liners that are a degree or two dishonest makes the show both immediately intriguing, but ultimately unsatisfying and a little disturbing.
It makes me wonder how many people watch these fictional shows that are so thoroughly saturated with current culture and actual contemporary news stories, and get "informed" on the topics with much conviction, because the characters that have those opinions and that are saying those things come across as so smart.
This girl is a conundrum:
Most of the time, even she has the Sorkinsian ability to rattle off smart-sounding quips and retorts, but she is supposed to be some dumb blonde. BUT, not too dumb. Just sometimes dumb. Sometimes really dumb. And what the hell are we supposed to think about this naive dingbat being given serious responsibilities like interviewing the governor of a state. She fricked up? No kidding!!
Having said all that, I vote for a superfluous nude scene involving this chick.

I'm also turned off by his working a couple of years behind the present day. Way too much hindsight is 20/20.

Pretty accurate on how sarcastic newsrooms really are.
Posted on 7/2/12 at 4:48 pm to Jimbeaux
On the "Making of The Newsroom" HBO special, Olivia Munn had a comment I got a kick out of. She said that she naturally talks fast and when the director told her "That's good, but can you slow it down a bit?" she said " I've got to be the first person ever considered too fast for Sorkin".

i still liked (not loved) the show though and will keep watching. I think what keeps me watching is my disdain for the way news is done and watching someone do it the right way makes me really cheer for Will McAvoy and want him to succeed........while talking in zippy little one liners to everyone in the room and having a 10 minute conversation crammed into 3 minutes.....okay I'm done

Good show....but it took a big left turn tonight. Really hope this doesn't become a GOP-bashing show like it was tonight.
