That's not what this thread is about. A great movie doesn't necessarily mean a great actor. I am only half joking about him, but I see the same redundancy as I do with John Wayne. Love both of them, just not much diversity.

You take that back. You see him shine in Magnolia.

matthew mcconaughey, owen wilson, and seth rogan, very overrated and always play the same rolls in every movie they act in

Mel Gibson...Can't stand the "short of breath" distraught, befuddled way his delivers his lines.

Probably the most over exaggerated of the overrated in fact he is underated because I dont know of anyone who has him rated at all!
If that makes any sense.
Damon has some good stuff too. Cage has some good stuff, Keanu has some good stuff too.
I agree with this. As does Wayne. And even Penn. Although, most of the praise for Penn comes for his not so great roles (Mystic River and Milk) rather than his actual great ones. Same as Russel Crowe being fawned over for The Gladiator or A Beautiful Mind, an awful and one-sided performance, and getting almost nothing other than a nomination for his actual best performance in The Insider.
But of course, the problem is:
quote:
most overrated actor
What does this mean? Is it about range? The ability to embody ONE character completely? Is it choice of films? These all have different answers.
When you consider the most "Artistic" of these differences, which would be actor with the most range or diversity, then you have overrated people like Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, Pacino, De Niro, Wayne, and yes even Bogey. Keanu goes here too, but he's not an overrated actor because who labels him as great? or even good?
But if it's about embracing one persona type, then yeah Hanks and wayne are some of the best. No one plays the gruff western cowboy better than John Ford, or at least few do. No one plays a nice, average american joe like Hanks.
So instead of being like everyone and saying the most controversial name I can think of, I'll go one step further..
Everyone is wrong in this thread, or at least misguided.

Awesome. Another thread where I can say Gary Oldman is overrated.

No, not necessarily but he was a big reason why those movies were great. It's also not really possible to star in that many good to great movies without some modicum of talent.
I don't think diversity really matters. Most actors only do certain genres but how well they do them is what makes them great.
Wayne was one of those actors who could act with just his sheer presence. And while some dismiss that as to not having much acting ability it is none the less a talent which very few possess.

In her recent autobiography, Diane Keaton makes the comment that "Without a great man writing and directing for me, I was a mediocre movie star at best." The same case applies to John Wayne. He was fortunate enough to be establish a close friendship with John Ford, the only director to win four Oscars and one of the greatest directors to ever work in Hollywood. Due to their friendship, John Ford gave Wayne a ton of juicy roles in some of his best movies. A lot of actors would have looked good working for a director like that.

See again this is where I disagree. I don't think an actor has to have range or diversity to be a great actor they just have to be great at what it is that they do do.
And yes I do think Keanu is a good actor.

Not all time, but I think DiCaprio is a good actor who picks good roles but not as great as everyone makes him out to be.
I agree with this.

Yes and a lot of actors did look good working with Ford but there is a reason why Ford choose Wayne which goes beyond mere friendship.
Also Ford was not the only director in which Wayne did some of his best work with. Now if you want to credit all of his work as that of his directors be my guest but I maintain the man had a presence about him which few possess.

I know. But there is a distinction that you have to make, see the rest of the answer:

Yes and I'm confused about John Ford as a gruff cowboy? I mean I know he has a few acting credits to his name in the silent era but I thought he was known more as a director?

Have you seen Henry's Crime yet? Keanu deadpan's it to perfection.

Ok this has to be the biggest WTF? The man could act with just facial expressions and mannerisms. Truly one of the greats.
Oh and speaking of that diversity thing. The man could do it all action, drama, comedy hell even musicals.

Not one mention od Al Pacino? He hasn't been in anything interesting in 20 years......when he was it was always similar characters.
Hardly merits a GOAT nomination as some would give him.

I think he is a decent actor, but no amongst the elites.
I loved his movies, but most legendary actors of that era are not on par with many top tier actors of the last couple decades.

Maybe if you said the last 10 years but in the last 20:
Glengarry Glen Ross
Carlito's Way
Heat
Donnie Brasco
The Devil's Advocate
The Insider
I found all of those interesting(the first two I think are great movies) and I still plan on watching the Insomnia remake at some time.
