I refuse to watch this show out of principle for the mere fact that Amazon has shown me the trailer at least 50 times now whenever I try to watch anything.
frick you Bezos, not doing it.

MMM is loosely based on the life of Joan Rivers. When Rachel B. takes out the twins and says "What man in his right mind would quit these!!" I was hooked.

The show is an obviously incredibly well-financed and beautifully shot, slow-moving piece of shite.

the club owner seems to have patterned her character in such a way as to make me think she’s channeling a 1940’s version of a misgendered Super Mario. I swear to you I kept looking for a tortoise shell or Toadstool to show up

What I really liked about the how is that it takes a familiar trope and examined it more closely. From the opening scene of her wedding, you expect the smash cut to the future would show Midge as miserable in her marriage and from the suffocating confines of 1950s New York... but instead, she's thriving. She enjoys making the roast to bump up the schedule to help out Joel and while her kids are treated more like an afterthought, she likes being the smartest person in the room. She uses her fancy education to advance in her social circles (just as, the show points out, her mother did).
It's JOEL who gets bored and throws his married life away. And from that point, Midge isn't willing to go back. It rises her character above bored housewife and into someone who has been pushed out on a ledge, and found she could fly.
And the supporting cast if f'n brilliant. I could watch Tony Shaloub and Kevin Pollock trade insults for a whole episode. And the show interrogates each of their points of view and finds validity in each of them. It takes everyone seriously, so it works as a drama.

Perfect response as I would expect from you.
Really sums it up well. Honestly its a borderline brilliant show. I was shocked at how much I loved it. Its hard not to fall in love with Midge.

You seem angry that the main character is female.
That's quite the reach.

This is true, but it's also true that she is a shitty, shitty parent
Does she spend ANY time with her kids?

Amy Sherman-Palladino is the GOAT.

That was part of the joke to me

Her dad is the funniest character.

Dad is the funniest. Like someone said, it's not so much about the comedy itself as it is about the characters.
And, the ones saying they don't like her, or they don't get it, or think the show is unworthy of the reviews and awards, remind me of the guy in the bar who heckles her in the last episode and then gets his arse kicked by the husband.

It's a mix of Mad Men and Inside Llewyn Davis.
Two of my favorite things in the world.

I watched the first season. It's pretty good. But I kind of don't care about seeing anymore of it.
