Yeah, GnR and Nirvana were gerat in their own rights but top 10 all time?
What do you mean by top 10 all time? As bands or as a song? I'm "older" and I'd put both in my top 10-15, but even if you don't, Welcome to the Jungle and Smells like Teen Spirit are iconic songs. LZ most well know song, Stairway to Heaven, really doesn't fit the category. They have several really good songs, but I have no problem with WTTJ as #1 on this list, even yhough I persoanlly would rank it 6th or 7th on Appetite for Destruction.

I would not have any songs from either of them in the top ten greatest hard rock songs ever.
As far as Zepplin goes.If you want to leave Stairway out.Which is crazy in itself.
Kashmir
Misty Mountain Hop
Rock and Roll
Ocean
Black Dog
Would all rank above anything GNR or Nirvana have to offer.

VH1 lost all credibility when they traded music videos and shows like Behind The Music for shows like Flavor of Love and I love the 80's.

Good one. But, 'Cowboy Song' is my fav Lizzy tune.

Not that I agree with the list, and who does, but I don't even agree that some of these songs are the best song by that artist.
Tom Sawywer? Please. Rush has 10 songs better than that overplayed crap.
Photograph? No way. Bringing on the Heartbreak or Rocket.
Hell, I object to just about every selection on the list as these songs being their "best" song.

Same here.

same is true with any countdown or top ?? list...they have no logic in their picks...they do this to generate buzz and get people talking....which seemed to work in this case as well.

I don't think you should look at it that way. The songs are the more popular ones. Quibbling over personal preferences makes any song list impossible. While any "best" list is largely subjective, we can add some objectivity by ranking songs that were more influential or for want of a better word popular.
Take Tom Sawyer, you might think its overplayed, but that song really took Rush to a different level of exposure. It is their most recongnizable and arguablly most importnat song. VH1 classic has been runnung s 2 hour special on Rush (Behind the light stage or something like that) and Neil Peart says he never gets tired of playing TS because its difficult. To me there are 4 better songs on Moving Pictures alone, but TS is maybe the quintessnetial Rush song.
IMHO the best Led Zepplin song is Over the Hills and Far Away. But if I did a top 100 list if all songs, I'd have to put Stairway #1 (out of LZ songs) because its the more "important" song.

quote:Beat me to it. I think some songs will make the list due to "influence" even if they weren't big chart singles (I'm not sure if punk qualifies under their definition of "hard rock", but if it does - Fugazi's Waiting Room or Fear's I Love Living In the City have to be on the list despite not being popular). But I think you have to limit the list to the band's "biggest" songs. Quality + popularity is a decent standard for these sorts of lists.

I also think whether the song itself is "hard" should matter. I love Kashmir, but it's not really a heavy number. It's no When the Levee Breaks, while we're throwing out our favorite Zeppelin tunes. I have no problem with the Zeppelin representatives limited to the big guns like Heartbreaker, Rock n Roll, The Ocean, and Black Dog.
It's a hard list definitionally, really. But I think they did a decent job. And I'm hoping whoever suggested Creed was merely kidding.

So, I'm flipping channels and I come across VH1's countdown of the 100 greatest hard rock songs in history.
And the winner is "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns and Roses ???
Really?
Why is that surprising? That list has been around for a long time, too. That was the big break out song from Appetite for Destruction, which is one of the biggest rock albums of all time.
"Stairway to Heaven" is the only other song that I have ever seen that topped a top whatever rock list.

They lose credibility immediately with Bon Jovi Being in the top 20.
I am not going to post the numbers again, so I will let you search for it if you want to know. I have proven the likes of you wrong, before. Bon Jovi is one of the BIGGEST Bands of all time. They have had tons of hits and keep on selling records. Look it up. I think I remember them being in the top 5 or 6 of all time selling acts. They also stay in the top 5 of the top touring bands in the past decade. Once again, look it up.

I hate to side with the Bon Jovi fan, but he's right. One of the biggest bands ever, and they certainly fall in the "hard rock" genre. Just because they aren't metal doesn't mean they aren't arena rock. I actually don't mind Bon Jovi's biggest songs, as they are pretty catchy, but their later stuff when they started making music for soccer moms is friggin awful.
