It’s been almost 20 years since I’ve seen this, but my interpretation always was as he settles in with the daughter on the train or bus or whatever. He’s thinking “WTF did I just do? Neither of us love each other.“ It is not a happy ending for anybody except her fiancé who obviously dodged a bullet.
