I can't wait until OP watches Part II and asks, "Who was that one guy that went fishing on the lake, and why does he say a Hail Mary prior to casting and when they cut away, what was that sound effect they used? They really didn't explain what happened very well."

As good as the movie is, you should read the book.

The Godfather Trilogy: 1901–1980 shows all three movies in one sitting and is set in chronological order.

Where can this be watched?

Poor Fredo. He's such a sympathetic character. Would be a great relative in a non-nob family.

There's some GOLDEN comments in this thread, but this one takes the cake for me.

The book is excellent and a must read. It provides more detail and background , which helps you understand the movies.

Tom was not demoted. Michael wanted to make the Nevada operation legitimate/legal. He wanted his children to have social standing in the community and possibly obtain political power. He needed Tom to move away from the family business to initiate the transition to the legitimate world. Also, he needed to protect Tom from what was about to occur. Michael knew he was about to bring down the wrath of the Corleone family upon the other families and Moe Green. Not knowing how it would end up, he needed it to appear as if Tom was now a civilian in the event something bad occurred. Finally, he wasn’t sure of the identity of the rat in his family. Turns out there were three : Tessio, Connie’s husband and Fredo. He needed to isolate all three until he figured out who else was involved outside of Tessio.

I haven't seen this movie in well over ten years, I always remember it being really slow, long, convoluted, unable to understand Marlon Brando, and never really liked it and thus never rewatched it.

Really? It may be the best movie ever made. Ever...
It's good to see you come around, though. I saw this when I was 13, and thought that it was fantastic.

The movie didn't piece that together too well for me.

I believe you.
