I thought that was a pretty strong episode. I enjoyed Hal's family story and their struggles with depression. I think Noah and Maggie are working together on something

Really good episode. They've pretty much erased everything the dumb black writer from episode three tried to screw up.
Mo Hal is not racist. The reason Hal didn't have fear is not because of white privilege. Hal actually had a good father and John had awful parents and both Hal and John know that.
I'd prefer for Hal t be alive but it's refreshing to get the real Hal and not the older cynical Hal. You can see that Hal actually could be a good mentor when he wasn't older and worn out. I like the contrast in the two Hals and seeing what a job like that can do for someone in their later years on the job.
Don't know if John will be able to charge the ring to keep Hal around long but I like this dynamic and a friendship actually forming and possibly true training.
Despite episodes three's trash it's turned out to be a good show. The cussing with John is really annoying. Since it was brought out on here how out of place it is I can't stop thinking about it. It's really just John too.

Yea maybe real Hal wasn't the right wording. More of the Hal that we want, not a bitter Hal. One that you can see how he was legit a hero and probably liked his job.
Also, might be dumb but Hal saying the sheriff shot him took me by surprise a bit. She kind of slipped off my radar with that. Assuming he's correct, which he might not be.

Nope, you don't. The most profane person you've ever met doesn't talk like this. I guess the alternative could be that you aren't gainfully employed and sit around like a loser all day, but no functioning member of society talks like this.

Holy crap you're an idiot. I take it back. You probably do talk like John Stewart on this show.

I will add that the Rings charge is not being handled well. The hologram sure lasted a long time for only having a 5% charge left

Yep, pretty glaring issue with this show tbh. They are completely inconsistent with what the ring may or may not be capable of on a 5% charge at any given time. I'm trying my best to ignore this part.
In this episode the Halogram even mentions that they should only have about an hour of charge left, and then they very clearly kept going for more than an hour (not only of "in universe" time, but very nearly in real time also).
I'm sure the charge will run out in the finale at a moment where it is most useful to the story.

quote:one thing this show has shown us is Hal's gut instinct is undefeated. Remember when the Kerry asked John if he thought she was a suspect and he said no? Hallogram immediatley knew "she did it". Why Kerry did it we don't know yet but i think Hal is correct.

The nonstop f-bombs in this show are ridiculous. No one talks like this.
It is annoying, but people do indeed talk like this.

This and worse, but they’re not usually people like John Stewart.

I was a bit letdown that the power battery wasn't in Hal's fail safe. My out of the box thinking now is that the yellow glow in that well was Sinestro creating a power battery, or Hal had hidden a battery on that dead planet.

Here's the thing, I don't think the show erased anything. Those were just the words of John's mother, who was clearly shown to be pissed and jealous that John Sr wasn't chosen to be the ring. I think her reaction is very realistic of someone who is jealous of someone else. Said episode shows just how far she was willing to go due to her ongoing jealousy.

Right. He talks like he's a newly enlisted military grunt at war, not like a man who has founded his own company and can pull out $315,000 at the drop of a hat. So allow me to be perfectly succinct for the idiots on this board who only care about things being succinct when it suits them: no one at John Stewart's supposed professional level and status talks like this. I shouldn't have had to spell it out like that for anyone with a functioning brain cell, but I should have recognized my audience here. My mistake.

This assumes usage, but based on what happened in this episode it would be hard to imagine the ring lasting through the entirety of it.
The way it was handled in this episode makes me think they really are setting this up for John to be a conduit of Guardian energy who does not need a ring. I didn't think that's where we were headed when they had him keep the bird construct going for way longer than he should have been able to, but this episode makes me think otherwise.

My wife and I are really confused as to why Hal Jordan would go to Federal Prison.
For what?
I've been thinking on this, and I'm not entirely sure.
We know he went to prison over the Rushville thing. A crap ton of innocent people died. Zoe was shot and killed via headshot. The audience all know it was due to the manhunter, and that Hal and John were the good guys. But nobody but those 2 know about the existence of manhunters. Considering John took her heart, how could they ever even prove that legally, Zoe was a manhunter and was the single cause of everything. For the people of Rushville, all they know is Hal showed up in town, then a bunch of shite started happening.
With all that being said, here is my speculation. We saw from this episode just how depressed Hal is/was. He probably figured that without the ring, he didn't have much to live for. So, he just decided to take the fall for everything, while leaving John completely out of it. He could have and should have easily got a lawyer to help him get cleared of everything, but maybe he just didn't want to? He was content with living the rest of his miserable life behind prison. Even still, 10 years sounds like a very short prison term if he took the blame for everything. It's possible that the judge gave him credit due to all of his years of being a superhero, saving the earth, etc.
I think all of this sounds plausible. But you see I had to a crap ton of speculation in order to get to this point. I do really wish this was actually spelled out more in the show.

I agree. I guess I meant more that it shut down any inkling that John's mother might be right. She wasn't, she's just an awful parent.
