You saying ODing on painkillers was the only option? No... writers could do a much better job of writing the MAIN character off the show than the lazy kill off.
Since she's not acting in the episode there isn't any better option than killing her off and any method of death they chose will be abrupt and "lazy". Runoff with the poolboy, never come back downstairs like Judy Winslow, make Roseanne's entire existence a dream, there's no smooth transition.

He's also close with Roseanne.
But not so close that there was any solidarity among the actors when Roseanne got railroaded by ABC. Every last one of them sold her out for a continued paycheck and they don't deserve so much as a sniff in their general direction from Roseanne.
I want her to get a recurring role on Last Man Standing and then spin that off to her own show on Fox.

William Bickley, the show's creator and a writer of the show, said that she was cut due to a "budget consideration". She was played by Valerie Jones in the pilot and Jaimee Foxworth for the rest of the series. If the show continued on into its final season, Judy would have attended Steve and Laura's wedding and revealed she had been living with her aunt Rachel in Detroit. Had the show not been cancelled Rachel and Judy would have returned home for Steve and Laura's wedding.

I have no doubt he'd turn down the role if it didn't put everyone else out of a job.
Eh idk, Dan and Roseanne both leaving together would have been a better way to handle it.
I'm sure ABC didn't want the show without Goodman though.
It's a shitty move by ABC, Roseanne (and The Connors) was her brain-child, labored and created by Roseanne, modeled after her own family and experiences. This is her show, about her life and they took it from her and continued it. It's the most Hollywood//show-biz move ever, and shows you once and for all, definitively, that Hollywood gives no shits about talent and creators.
It's embarrassing honestly. It's like having "The Howard Stern Show" without Howard, or having "The Larry King Show" without Larry King. It's downright wrong, pointless, and a waste of resources.
The ratings weren't even close to Roseanne, and I have to think now that they addressed how she died, the ratings are going to tank faster than this year's Raiders team.

This would be following the Fuller House model. Focus on the kids and their families and maybe have Dan and Jackie make a cameo appearance once in a while. They didn't have to kill Roseanne.

They're lower than the revival's premiere but the ratings tailed off after two weeks last season and this episode got nearly identical to what they were getting. Whether they maintain that is a question though.

Politics aside it wasn't that bad of a watch. Just felt like one of the later season Rosannes.
Got a good laugh from Becky saying that the pills were the only thing she wanted out of Rosanne's closet. The girls realizing that Rosanne's previous claims of being dead had screwed them from getting any relief from the bills was a good line.
Goodman and Gilbert deliver no matter what they're doing.
It is what it is.

I watched. John Goodman is looking old these days. Like, he really doesn't look well. I know he's in his 60's and he lost a bunch of weight, but he just looks tired.

They set her up by hiring a black woman as a White House adviser.

You can pretty much always spot a smoker, especially an older one. Crazy what that shite does to your body, inside and out.

It was a quick and uninspired attempt to give a reason why she isn't there anymore, but does not fit in with last season. She wasn't super addicted to opioids and things were actually looking up with the insurance paying off and her getting the operation needed.
It makes no sense she's OD on painkillers after all that.
They could have just had her not survive the surgery. She wasn't in the best shape and it makes as much, if not more, sense as overdosing. Having her OD on drugs was just a (likely passive-aggressive) shot at her.

The show that Roseanne made has a interracial couple, discussed bad healthcare, and had a tranny yet the liberals still ate her alive.

And the conservatives responded by quickly doing a 180 to champion her cause.

Just a terrible show. Some lib/prog donors will probably dump some money into it to try and keep it afloat, but it is on life support. LOL at ABC.

But was it AfterMash bad?
Yeah, pretty bad. So was The New WKRP.
Normally, you just can't get that magic back - it's tough enough to keep it going, non-stop, without it getting stale. But, to shut down and come back decades later? That's a tall hill to climb.

Yep Tongue-in-Cheek move given the way the sleeping pills excuse played out for her...
