Because they are not the same. It's as if some poor amateur said, "I'm going to make a Coen movie" and then failed miserably. Or, the Coens did make it in order to sit back and laugh at those who like it

I'm not a fan of The Big Lebowski either. I laughed here and there and, I have to admit, totally lost it when John Goodman tried to spread Donnie's ashes. On the other hand, I'm not the biggest fan of the Coen Brothers. Most of their movies are lost on me. The only movies they made that I truly love are Fargo and Burn After Reading.

I'm with everyone who says it gets funnier every time you watch it.

It is THE film that demands a rewatch. Almost no one gets The Big Lebowski on the first viewing, and even after multiple viewings many still don't. During the first watch you're caught up in the mystery and where this is all leading to, but in the end it leads to absolutely nothing. And really thats what it is. If Seinfeld was the show about nothing, then The Big Lebowski is the film about nothing. You've got Walter whose existence is pretty much solely defined by a pointless war, you've got Maude who puts importance in just pointless bullshite, Mr. Lebowski flaunts his inexistent wealth and is basically worth nothing, the plot is really Bunny going on a one week binger while all other characters remain woefully ignorant to what is really going on and try to actually make this into some sort of mystery, and finally the Nihilists who believe in nothing, not to mention the Dude's indifference to the world at large. So watch it again and come back here. We'll accept your apology.
