The Assistant | Julia Garner (Ruth from Ozark)

I hadn't heard much about this film but figured it was a #metoo statement movie. It was.
It's also beautifully shot and Julia Garner gives a great, subdued performance. Very indie feel, as the bulk of the film is her going about her tedious job as an assistant to a film producer.
The #metoo stuff builds small and slowly. And when it "sort of" hits the fan it's not some cartoonish Weinstein scene, it's fairly subtle.
Basically a day in the life of a woman witnessing a powerful guy using his professional position to cheat on his wife. Interesting in that you see her confront this stuff for the first time, and having to decide how she'll deal with a world where this is the norm.
Guys will see it and think she's overreacting or going about things in the wrong way. Women will probably see it and think "that sucks" and she either reacted correctly, or needs to act on it differently, or just get on with her life.

thanks for the recommendation. "during times like these", i've been looking for some indie-type movies to help break up the tv show binge watching. Sounds like a good option. I was caught off guard with her performance in Waco (not caught off guard by the quality of her performance, but just the different nature of her charcter). We had just finished binging 3 seasons of Ozark, and when you do that you begin to think of the actor/actress as being that particular character. She's definitely talented.

how many times does she curse? Cause that's all I remember about her in Ozark. Well that and her annoying accent.

My wife and I watched this tonight and found it incredibly boring. Basically 90 minutes of watching Julia Garner perform mundane tasks. The only interesting part of the whole movie was her HR conversation with Tom from Succession.
Do not recommend.

To each is own but that movie was boring as Frick
A movie about a day from start to finish at the office. 3 out of 10 for me.

Beautifully shot? It looked to be shot on a camcorder by someone following her around for an entire day. I thought I was watching an hour and a half Instagram story of the most boring day ever. The metoo shite was nothing. The HR guy was basically saying “wtf do you want me to do? It’s not my business who he pounds on his own time if the new hottie is game.”

The camera is still in almost every shot, minus a few very slow pans...
You must have very slow and patient instagram friends, who also have very expensive lighting equipment.
