did the fact that it was about slavery get it over the top rather then it actually being the best movie?

It may be a chicken-egg thing but the visceral nature probably helped a lot more than anything. It was pretty raw.

And several of its competitors may not have measured up to some voters' idea of a "best picture". I loved Wolf of Wall Street and was pulling for Leo but it was basically Animal House meets Wall Street and Gravity didn't seem like the best picture of the year to me.

American Hustle could have contended, I guess. I don't know about the rest.

For sure. Many will say it's just because it's about slavery but it's a great story and great film
the book was amazing haven't watched the movie yet but if they can do it justice it deserved the oscar

I despise white guilt films like The Butler but 12 Years is legit. Truly a great movie

i need to watch it. i was turned off because it came out right after the butler and i had heard that the butler was the ultimate white guilt movie. guilty by association in my head

Bale kicked back like frick this

Saw that too. The category was so stacked this year. He'll get his for Exodus. Bale, Leo and MM all were phenomenal this year. If Leo wasn't getting it, then MM was a fine second choice for me. Not a popular opinion, but Leo is the best actor going.

Hoping that MM pulls off the Best Actor at both the Oscars and Emmys this year.

I bet Oprah is maaaaaaaad

Yeah, I'm betting she was pissed. Was in the Bahamas once, and ran into a guy who worked on her ship at a casino. He said she was the world's biggest bitch, and made them personally take off her and her guests shoes the moment they got on the boat, and that was the very least of the bad things Oprah made them do.

I bet she was insufferable to her employees for a month after the Oscars snubbed her white guilt film. Seriously, it was Reagan that was the bad guy, and he was crying at the election of the very person Oprah helped get elected.

I think it's actually pretty popular. It still baffles me that he has yet to win one.

Oprah is the most hated woman in the Bahamas. Every time I go down there (3 times ) I hear bitching about her from the natives. She thinks they are her house boys down there.

They love Eddie Murphy though.

Leo puts out consistent good to great performances, but honestly every year that he's lost I've felt like there was someone better. Except maybe Gilbert Grape losing to Tommy Lee Jones. But he went full retard.

MM is an excellent actor who does a lot of interesting roles, often for Indy films. Much deserved.
I didn't see all of the movies but Twelve Years a Slave was better than Wolf of Wallstreet.

I saw Gravity, American Hustle, Her, and WOWS out of the 9 nominees. I have Nebraska loaded up and may watch it tonight if I ever get my arse off of here. You can probably guess the order I'd rank them in

The Butler was a poorly made, pandering movie.

12 Years A Slave was a great movie by any measure.

Same. I don't particularly feel as if he's been snubbed. Leo is a really good, but not truly great actor in my mind. He hasn't delivered a performance that has truly blown my face off. In Django for instance, I thought his performance was not quite as good as Waltz or Jackson's.

Has he had the role to get him an Oscar?

Can't wait to see 12 Years a Slave. Gravity and Her are both fantastic movies but there is no doubt in my mind that Mud was snubbed. Best movie made in the last few years IMO.
