re: The 1995 Oscars. Did they get it right?

Shawshank is a piece of shite movie. Any high school AV club member could have directed Freeman and Robbins through that mediocre script. The reason it didn't win shite is because Stephen King did the entirety of the work for the movie before the movie was even a concept.
The plot of the movie is definitely its shining aspect, but there are a lot of other great things about it that I think you are overlooking. I thought the movie was very well paced and put together. I thought the setting and visual imagery created an awesome grim feeling to it throughout the darkest point in a movie (when he arrives in the prison, when he learns about Elmo Blatch, etc.)
To me its a shining example of perfect classical storytelling of a great story. I find it entertaining every time I watch it.
I haven't seen Quiz Show, so I'll have to give that movie a shot when I get a chance.

I found Gump to be aimless and amoral, even immoral, when you reflect on its content so I'm obviously not a fan or it winning best picture or director.

The 1995 Oscars had arguably some of the greatest achievements in cinema that year to reward. The three main pictures I'm talking about are Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, and the Shawshank Redemption. All of these movies are in Imdb's top 15 with Shawshank Redemption being #1.
I have always though that "The Shawshank Redemption" was a much better movie than "Forrest Gump." To me, it should have won best picture best adapted screenplay, and best editing. "Forrest Gump" is an entertaining movie, but there are some parts in it that are just too cliche for me to take seriously.
Dig deeper and you’ll discover that The IMDb Top 250 is completely and irrevocably rigged.
If you’re wondering why the top 15 of the IMDb Top 250 is missing oft-lauded classics like Casablanca, Dr. Strangelove, Citizen Kane, Psycho, Vertigo and 2001: A Space Odyssey—we only have IMDb to blame.
Deadpool currently has a higher ranking than Citizen Kane—no joke.
Film critic Amy Nicholson thinks that, even though the list has millions of voters, there is a dominant type—a college freshman trying to put on airs. “When I look at this chart,” Nicholson said, “I see a college kid trying to assemble a wall of DVDs he thinks will impress other people. There’s a lot of bluster in it. It’s the idea of liking a film to reflect who you are as a person. You wanna tell people that your favorite movie is [The] Shawshank Redemption because you think that makes you sound tough but sensitive and smart."
It’s also the bro with tons of expendable time, she adds: “Who is the person who takes the time to go to IMDb, login, figure out how to vote? I’ve never voted on an IMDb film in my life. The person who does that is a person who really wants to feel like their opinion matters but maybe they haven’t been that exposed to movies.

I didn't want to create a new thread on this because it's random, but I'm watching Shawshank Redemption right now (Directed by Frank Darabont). This man directed 2 very solid films in the 90's (Shawshank Redemption & The Green Mile); however, after that he just disappeared and resorted to writing/directing episodes on some cheap TV shows.
Did this man get exposed or something as not being the real brains behind his own success? One trick pony?

Shawshank was too dark and menacing for the gen public in 1995...Feel-good Gump was the clear winner by a huge margin for Hanks and Zemeckis.
Shawshank, though, has won many times over in terms of re-watchability. I can't tell you how many times I've watched it simply because it was on.
Sitting thru Gump..again...I don't think so. Maybe after Titanic...not.

I think Shawshank could've gotten the nod for screenplay adaptation...but it's not the best Stephen King movie.
That goes to Stand By Me, original title of the story was "The Body" published in Different Seasons (1982)...Same book that "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" and "Apt Pupil" were published in.
And to me, the fourth and last story in the book was the best in "The Breathing Method" and could still be King's Ace in the Hole if anyone ever brings it to the screen. Talk about true Lovecraftian horror...

sometimes i feel bad for hating on Gump because it won, when in actuality, it's a really great, deserving movie, i just like PF and SR more.

What the hell is people 's problem with True Lies?
It's like the pinnacle Arnold movie. Plus Tom Arnold is hilarious.
Yeah I don't get this either.
It's by far the best movie not named terminator or t2 Arnold has ever been in. Someone could even probably come up with an objective argument that true lies is a superior movie to the first 2 terminator flicks as well.

Not anymore.
People really need to wait a few months to write reactionary articles. When a popular film first premieres on the IMDB Top 250 it's going to be astronomically high at first. As time goes on, however, and non-fanboys start watching and rating the movie, that ranking starts to diminish.
Deadpool is now sitting at #119 (it was at #118 a few days ago) on the IMDB Top 250 while Citizen Kane is sitting pretty at #67.

Best movie of '95 is Quiz Show.

Or the fact that original post didn't mention Jamie Lee.
Even if she has/had a penis thing.

The list isn't perfect, but is pretty solid top to bottom. In terms of cinema, there really is no unanimous top 15 movies of all time. Every list will be met with debate no doubt.
I think the reason Shawshank Redemption is listed at the top is because it was a film that appealed to a variety of different audiences. No matter what a viewer's personal preference of movies was, (horror, scifi, comedy, drama, etc.) everyone who watched it seemed to just like it.
